I NEED HELP

I NEED HELP

So, i spend the ENTIRE day today, altering out honeymoon plans, because Dave's boss is a jerkoff and won't let him do two weeks in a row, even though Dave told him A YEAR ago that this was our plan......and i plan the whole thing out and then find that the car rental ALONE is going to run us $963.00.....

because we're picking up in Houston (on september 13th) and returning to Las Vegas (on september 23rd)....

There has to be a better way...but i can't find it....and i'm seriously at the point of crying...

The best price i could find was on Expedia (hotwire doesn't do one way rentals)...

Is there ANYONE with an idea of how to do this?????

Are you a member of AAA or anything like that? Any of your CC's linked to car rentals? They sometimes offer better deals.

Re: I NEED HELP

try priceline & orbitz...also, you should go directly to the car rental websites & see what they offer....sometimes it is the same as the discount sites.

Re: I NEED HELP

have you contacted the car rental companies directly? they might be able to help you out over the phone

not that this is much better- but the AAA rate with Hertz is $867 for a midsized sport (Toyota Corolla or similar)

Oh believe me, I know about this..... I wanted to do this in Alaska, and they wanted to charge me $500 for the different drop off location. So, we are flying from one city to the other instead of driving. It's cheaper. Look into that - I know you want to drive to see the scenery (I did too), but it really might be a lot cheaper ....

Stay away from Hertz, too. They are usually $300 more than any other rental company.

Re: I NEED HELP

Did you try Thrifty? DH and I did this last year....picked up the car in Seattle and dropped it off in Portland 9 days later, and I dont think the dropoff fee from Thrifty was that high. I think I booked through Orbitz, and it came out to maybe $5-600?

Re: I NEED HELP

I know very little about car rentals (can't drive), but I know that AAA membership (and maybe even Costco / BJ's memberships) offer discounts with some rental companies. Also I know with hotels, sometimes it is better to call the company directly instead of going through Expedia or some other site. You can try to haggle with them.

Re: I NEED HELP

if you have geico i think i remember my mom saying something about a good discount for rental cars through them.

Re: I NEED HELP

i checked thrifty (thanks to MJdoc) and it's still at 756...which is much better than the 963....

Dave has geico - we'll check out that option as well.

Re: I NEED HELP

Sorry Jess, I don't know that you'll be able to get around it. I just checked kayak.about.com which searches all the car rental sites at once, and the cheapest it found it for was $97/day after you factor in the drop off.

Is there a reason not to drive back to return in Texas, though not necc. Houston? My understanding is that the drop off fees kick in if you want to drop at a different location out of state.

because we have a limited amount of time and it's a road trip....we only have so many days & can't afford to spend the necessary time to get back to Texas...

Thank you for checking though - i have never heard of that website...

I just checked maps.yahoo.com/dd - you would lose one day of your trip to drive back to a Western city like Lubbock from Las Vegas (takes 13 hours to get back). I don't know if one day destroys the trip, but it might be worth it to you if it brings the price from nearly $1000 to more like $250.
