FH and I are having a very untraditional ceremony... we're both jewish, but he is adamant against having a jewish ceremony. We already got married at City Hall (to give us enough time to file the papework for a greencard before his work visa expires), so we don't need an officiant at the wedding... so what in the world do we do??? I'm thinking of maybe exchanging our own personal vows... maybe a family member or friend guide the proceedings... maybe involve the bridal party somehow... any ideas????!!!

Re: I need ideas!
Ahh, if I didn't have the Roman Catholic restraints...what a wonderfully insane ceremony I would have!
First off, use all the talents of the people around you....
anyone musically inclined? I like the old traditions where the bride and groom followed a strolling quartet through the village collecting their wedding guests and congregating at their ceremony location.
Have it in a fantasticly personal place...for me that would be on the beach.
No chairs...ask everyone to form a circle around you.
Incorporate poetry, ballads, quotes. Ask your readers to do the homework--finding a piece that they feel represents your love. You'd be amazed at an outsider's perspective.
Sounds like a dream to have such freedom!

Thanks for the ideas!!!
My brother is VERY musically inclined, but he thinks it's inappropriate for him to do anything at a wedding because he wants to be a guest... phooey... and I think my bridal party may be too embarrased to do anything! Hmmmm... this is going to take some cojoling

Re: I need ideas!
I have been thinking about this- how about reading love poems to each other. Writing your own vows is great! I actually met with my rabbi yesterday and he told me that in Jewish faith, the rabbi doesn't marry you. You marry each other. The wedding occurs when he asks you to marry him adn you accept. (We get all the power).
So make your own vows, but make sure he asks you to take him as your husband. Then you can do a ring exchange. I think that would be perfect!

You know, I think I remember reading that somewhere, that in the jewish faith, a rabbi is not necessary for the marriage... so if anyone gives me any crap about not having a rabbi, that's exactly what I'm telling them! Thanks!!
