I need more car buying help. PLEASE

Original post by marymoon

I'm so stressed with this. When I bought my car, it was FUN. This is awful.

WOuld you buy

a 2005 old bodystyle Jetta for $17,500 (MSRP $19,500)

a 2002 used jetta with $15K miles for $13,500.

a new hyundai elantra for $13,000

a new honda civic for $15,000

I'm SO confused. If we weren't buying the car with the wedding $$, I'd be buying a brand new jetta with all the bells and whistles and call it a day...but it's the wedding $$, so price is important..but I also don't want to buy a hunk of junk. I'd rather get value for my $$

What do you think is good? Also would you ever buy a used car? How do I get a good price on a new or used car>

ETA: PLEASE GIVE ME TIPS ON NEGOTIATING

My DH has a 96 Civic, it has 140K miles and still runs great. He still has the original clutch!!

My MIL leased a Jetta in 2000 and loved it. When her lease was up she leased a 2004.

She got the car mid-Feb of this year. Within a week the check engine light came on. The car has been at VW since. She has been getting the run around since then...they are waiting for the part...it is a hard part to get...the part is in Mexico.

I would say go with the Jetta if that's what you really want. I had a Jetta and loved it. Now I have a VW Cabrio convertible and love it too. No major problems with either. My DH had a civic which was great as well. Whatever you decide, I'm sure you'll be happy!

I'm really going to look into the civic.

The reason I want to buy a good car now and not a cheap car is that I just don't believe in buying something I don't like b/c it's chepaer so then i have to buy AGAIN in a few years. I'd rather buy something once and keep it for a long time. My Bug was a little expensive but I absolutely LOVE it and I want to drive it forever. Also new is great. I've had to for 5 years and I haveb't had to put much money into it and it's running like new. I've only needed tires (cause I got flats), brakes and a battery, which are all standrd after 5 years

My sister got her civic in 2001 - other than the basic maintenance, oil changes, etc. - it has not needed a thing.

You keep saying A good car and not a cheap car... CHEAP CARS CAN BE GOOD CARS 2. If I could get a brand new hyndai for the same price I could get a 6-7 year old Civic I would do it. Even though I love my Civic. A newer car be it Hyndai or not is much better then buying a used car. I don't get it... I know you are on a tight budget. I know you had to postpone your wedding. If I were you Id go and buy the cheapest (but yet) nicest and best running car around. Im sorry but I think you need to open up your mind a little look at the big picture. What is hyndais warante like 100,000 miles or 10 years?

I agree!
Also, there are a TON of good used cars to be found out there. Just because a car is used doesnt mean its going to be done in a year.

Plus, doesn't NY have lemon laws?

This could just be a personal thing, but I think buying a used car is opening up a whole other can of worms, not only do you have to deicde if you liek the model, etc, but then you have to find out the facts on that EXACT car and compare those prices, and is $1000 es sworth it for 25,000 more miles, etc etc...I don't have my dad to help me, and I have no idea.

Also, no one in my family has EVER bought a used car. This may predate lemon laws, but it's just embedded that it's something you don't do. But I did mention that i *am* looking at certfied 2002 jettas
