If there was someone in your family who has had a history of abusing and being addicted to painkillers (Vicodin) and you believe there was a problem again, and the DR they get them from was also your Dr., would you mention it to the Dr. next time you went there??

I would absolutely mention it, though I don't know if they will listen to you (or can). I know they cannot discuss it with you.
Good Luck!!

Hmm Stacy, I don't know. It never hurts to say something, but at the same time, there's privacy issues. I don't know what to tell you on this one. Tough call.

I would mention it, just for my own conscience. I think the Dr. cannot discuss it with you due to privacy laws.
Good Luck.

Re: I need opinions please...
OK, well I DID tell the Dr. And I'm talking about my BIL (sisters husband) . The Dr. dismissed my BIL from care, and my BIL is beyond pissed.
Why do I bother to try to do the right thing?

You know what, you did what you thought was the right thing and I guarantee that you would have felt worse if you didn't say something. Luckily the doctor did the right thing.

The Dr. told him that someone discussed it with him, but my BIL knew immediately because I'm the only one that goes there.

OK the doctor really should not have said that to him, but I honestly don't think that you should be an enabler and I think you did the right thing.
What does your sister say?

wow....I am sorry your doctor handled it so poorly. Maybe now is a good time for an intervention, though, since it is already out in the open.
Sorry that you are in this situation. I hope it gets better for you & BIL.

Re: I need opinions please...
I don't think you can be surprised your BIL is pissed, since you knew ahead of time that you would be implicated (purely b/c you use the same doctor).
I think the doctor was wrong to give him ANY reason that involved another person. He should have just said it was a professional decision, based upon his own observations. JMO.
Just b/c your BIL can't get the Vicodin from this doctor, doesn't mean he won't find someone else willing to write the scrip.

Re: I need opinions please...
I checked with my sister before I said anything to the Dr, so she was fine with it. The whole think just stinks. My family is very close, including my BIL, but he and my sister have been having some major problems, and I thought this might help, instead it's caused more problems.
ETA: Claud, yes I'm sure he can go somewhere else to get them, however this Dr. is VERY quick to give them out. After 3 or 4 years of my BIL going failthfully at the end of every month for Vicodin (which is HIGHLY addictive) you'd think that this Dr. would have figured out there was something going on

I guess it did create more problems but maybe in the end (hopefully) your BIL will be thanking you for stepping in where he was powerless. All you can do is say a prayer at this point. You are trying to help someone you love so dont feel bad.

I definitely think you did the right thing and you should feel good about it. It's too bad the doctor didn't handle it differently though. Someday I am sure, in the future, your BIL will be thankful that you got involved.
