I've only been to 2 weddings in my life and It's making wedding planning a little hard because I just don't really know how it will all come together.
Right now I'm trying to choose between a band and DJ. After figuring out the costs, a DJ was an obvious choice. But my FIL's weren't crazy about the idea and now decided to pay for part of a band. Nothing too expensive (around $6k give or take). So now here is my question....what should I do?? I went to see a band that was give good reviews on here and really disliked it. I felt that they really botched up the music and just wasn't happy with the performance. I'm going next week to see another one which I am much more positive about.
If you could choose between a band or DJ what would you do? I know this can be different for everyone but I'm really on the fence. If I went with a DJ I would have all the ad on's (singer, percussion, ect).

im having a dj b/c of the reason you stated..i feel that bands have their own take on the songs..and i want to hear my wedding song as it originally is. BUT there are some really great bands out there...but it can get pricey depending on what you want. Maybe check out a few more bands and see how they sound..if you still don't find one you like, go with the dj.

I booked a band/DJ for around the price you're looking to spend but they are up in Thronwood, Westchester. I'm not sure if you're willing to travel up there, they do some live singing and some DJing. They are also sing Italian and Spanish in addition to English. I can FM you their details if you want.

Ok well depending on the size of your wedding a band could be anywhere up to 12grand. Especially for a good one! Iknow when i loked it would have cost me 10g because i have over 250 guests & the size of my room. I think a DJ with all the add ons could go up to 5/7g much better to me! GOOD LUCK!

i think bands are very pretty , but I want to hear the original singer like when i am jamming with my friends at a bar, i hate it when they put thier own mix on the words or notes.. i also want to hear notorious BIG so it all depends on the tone of your wedding... my wedding is a big party not a fancy, formal affair

I personally like a DJ better than a band. I want to hear the song how it's played on the radio. I would just do add on's.

I booked a band for my reception. Times Square Orchestra......they are great my sister had them at her wedding. They have a 9 pc band and the cost is around 6k. Hope that helps

there's something about the wedding bands i've heard that reminds me of the cheesy music you hear on cruise ships. i don't really get into the cheesiness of a lot of djs, but i feel like i have more control over it with a dj when they're playing the original recorded music. JMO

I would get the DJ with all the add in. I feel like there are certain songs that I want to hear the original not a band signing. My DOC recommends this band on her website and I actually heard them perform a lounge one time. They are really great maybe you want to take a look at.

Personally, I favor a DJ over a band. I don't feel there's enough flexibility with a band and I love music so I want to hear the original tracks, not someone else's take on them. But that's JMO.

i feel like me and my FH have been going back and forth and still havent booked anything because we are in the same boat as you ... the thing with a band is that unless you get an amazing band its not worth it ... my FH's sister had an amazing band but they were $10K and we just cant do that! i dont want to get a cheaper band and have it stink. i would rather pay less, get the dj and just have add ons ... which gives it the feel of the band just with the original music! i mean again it really depends on what you want but i think im leaning towards the dj.
ok...before I write...please no that i mean no disrepect..this is just a PERSONAL OPINION. when i see a dj i think sweet 16. A wedding to me calls for a band. Now dont get me wrong..I have been to plenty of weddings tha had dj/s that were FanTaSTIC! I guess ti just depends on the crowd and the feel you are going for. i want the old world classic feel that my venue delivers..(westbury manor) and have a very renaisance looking gown. A band was no tough decision for me. Its all a matter of preference though. good luck!

Sometimes I like a great band and at times, I wish there was a DJ. It's really a matter of personal preference. I went to a wedding on Saturday and there was an AMAZING band. But as amazing as they were, I felt that they didn't play as many songs as a DJ would. But again- they were so good that everyone was dancing and having a great time. For me though- the cost would be a factor.

i think typically bands are seen as more 'classy' but ive been to weddings that had both and i always felt that more people danced for a DJ - we are having a DJ - we are having a DJ who does clubs/radio/mixtapes for our wedding and i like his stuff better than a band - so hopefully we'll feel like we are out at a club when he's on ....

IMO, a band has a really hard time singing/playing today's music... it just doesnt sound right for whatever reason.... my parents were upset that i wasnt getting a band, so instead i did the whole dj/percussionist/wedding singer kinda thing...
i think it will turn out just wonderful!

I have now been to three weddings! It does make it difficult to figure out certain things in terms of planning. I would say, go with what you and FH want! Personally, we went with a DJ because it was less expensive and also because we want to hear the songs we like the way we know them.

Personally, FH and I love to dance so a band just wouldn't do. I think if you are looking to dance to anything that is played on the radio you should have a DJ. Pop, hip-hop, r&b, alternative songs will never feel right on the dance floor with a band imitating them. Bands might be good but it will never be the same as having the actual song.
If you want like big band music, swing music, jazz, that kind of thing I would go with a band.
