I need some serious help with my resume and portfolio (Graphic Design)

5-6 weeks ago i was laid off. i have an AAS in Graphic Design and am trying to get a job in the field. My portfolio just is not doing it. I finished school dec 2001 and my last calss was supposed to be portfolio, but they cancelled it. So, I am not sure what to do. Please help guide me. I figure asking people on here is easier then asking my bil because he is in the middle of buying his first house, and you do not know me. I think an outside opinion is good.

What type of graphic design work do you do? Print? Web? Packaging?

I used to be a recruiter for graphic and industrial designers and used to review portfolios 15xs a week!

what type of GD job are you trying to get?

well, i am trying for entery level anywhere. I can create logo, corporate identity, packaging. I worked for a compnay doing preflight work fro 2.5 years. I have created cd cover, insert, and on-cd artwork. my fav is package design.

I guess if you want to do package design you have to stress your portfolio with packaging design work you've done in the past...

It's sad but those CD covers and stuff are great but everyone does them and I don't think you can build a portfolio on that.

Corporate ID is great too but for that you need to have not only logo but through to the Corporate ID Standards Manual with Pantone and sizing specs, etc...

Some of the best portfolios I saw were very simple- standard black- with just great work- nothing too fancy... I think the work needs to speak for itself.
