I need to vent

ok I hate my dad today! I have been asking him for 2 months now how much he is going to help out with the wedding and he keeps giving me the same answer.....'its a year and a half away i dont know yet' this is the last thing i need to be stressing over.....This is supposed to be a fun happy time in my life and i think he just does this kind of stuff to me because he knows he can and because it makes him feel like hes in control! AHHHHHH Im so frusterated!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: I need to vent

go on your appointments and get written estimates. Sit down with him and go over the estimates so he can see how much everything costs. Tell him you need to book at least a year in advance to make sure you get a good deal and the vender you want. good luck

I feel ya, you will see that everyone ***** while planning your wedding...even FH....so take a deep breath and go on planning...figure out what you can spend and then you can go up to him with the figures that you need :)

Can we trade - just kidding...

My dad critisized me for setting a wedding date with only 6 months to get everything done... he had me so stressed that I just called a bunch of vendors, especially music and photography (he told me I'll never find anything without at least a year's notice)... low and behold they are all available and none of them are like - what are you waiting for? Relax and get your ideas together you don't need to really book much at this point although I know it's exciting to do so. Then I agree with the other posts, write down what each thing costs and give your father a rough estimate of what the total budget will be. The only thing is that you can't rely on a percentage he'll pay for, so be prepared to compromise. Some will say its your day, and it is, but if you are relying on someone else's money they usually do get a say. My sister encountered that when it came to music.

At a year and a half, do things within your control... pick out your dress, and get your BM's together to get theirs. Check out different bridal showcases and expos. Then when the check comes you will know exactly where you want to go. Vendors will try to pressure you to book now, but you do have time unless you have a super popular date (like 7/7/07 seems to be this year).

Mrs. Ptobe, Thanks for the advice......we are in similar situations but yet so different! My dad told me that it was too early to start booking stuff so i called around and the place I wanted to have my reception was booked(I originally wated to have our wedding on 6-7-08, we changed to to 5-24-08 so i could have the reception at the place i wanted it) so i was more than extactic to throw that in his face! Oh by the way we have the same 1st dance song!!!!!!

We are paying for the wedding ourselves-as far as we know. My father and mother (divorced) are each giving us money and we have no clue-they are just surprising us and making us save for the whole wedding and will give it to us as a gift-they are messing with me by saying maybe $5000 maybe $30000. It's very unsettling cause we may need that to pay everything off in the end-but right now we are saving like maniacs. Hang in there-I know how you feel.

Dont be frustrated-my dad has done the same thing-he makes me crazy. Everytime we talk the number he gives me is different.

Re: I need to vent

My parents waited until about a week and a half to tell us what they were going to do for our wedding. I never really brought it up to them and they never mentioned it to us (until a week and a half before the wedding). So the whole time I thought that DH & I were going to have to pay for the reception so we saved everything we made. I even got a second job to help pay for the bills, because between the house on LI, our rental houses in PA, and our cars, on top of the wedding we thought we had to pay for, we were struggling every month. My mother said she waited so long to tell us because she wanted us to save the money that they are putting towards the wedding. She knew that if she told me months before the wedding I would have gotten extra stuff for the wedding because we had the extra money. And she was right. I cut out the cigar roller, the bag piper, extra hour on top of the VH to the wedding, rolls limo, etc. just because I thought that DH & I were paying a huge part of the wedding and we did not have to extra money to spend. So then right before our final meeting with our CH to pay our final balance and bring the favor and stuff, my parents gave us a check for the entire cost of the reception (plus everything else they paid for

I personally would not count your on your dad paying for anything. I would go about planning the wedding and your and FH paying for it. Its your wedding, so take the attitude that you will pay. You dad doesn't have to give you anything. With a year and half you can save and pay for your own wedding and if you get money from you dad even better. I t worked for I-can't -wait.

It was such an amazing surprise and we were so happy that they did it that way!!! It was frustrating to wait, but in the end I was so happy that they helped us to save that money and not spend it on extra things we did not need.

Re: I need to vent

it took FH about 2 and a half/3 months to ask about the budget. so frustrating. tell him that the budget is keeping you from looking at vendors because you dont know what price range you should be looking at

If your dad is not giving you an answer then assume he is giving you nothing and pay for the wedding yourselves.
