I find it to be really hard- im doing the cold turkey method. Anything to control the cravings?
And for those who quit, doesnt it feel like you are losing a close friend, like I am not sure how Im going to do when all my firends are blowing smoke in my face or how Im going to get thru stressful times etc.
Any words of wisdom???

Re: I quit smoking and I need advice
Just hang in there!!! I did it 6 months ago and it was really hard and I was a real bitc# for a couple of days. I suffered through the cravings and some how made it. I did cheat and have about 4 cigarettes between sept & october, but that's about it.
That you can't smoke in bars now made it so much easier. For a few months, I actually enjoyed being in the company of smoke because it was as close as I would allow myself to get to smoking.
I still miss it and could probably start back tomorrow if I didn't promise DH that I wouldn't.
I do feel much better not smoking. I can take stairs without panting, my sense of smell & taste are much stronger and my skin looks better.
Good luck!!! And Congrats for trying!!!!!!!

Re: I quit smoking and I need advice
It's hard! I quit cold turkey but with assistance. I did this accu-pressure type thing that relieved the cravings and basically eliminated the physical withdrawal. I just had to deal with the psychological addiction.
And I know what you mean about losing a friend - but that's the mentality that you have to change. It's not a friend, its an enemy that will kill you if you let it. You have to change your way of thinking about the whole thing. When you see friends smoking, instead of thinking, oh, lucky them, they're smoking, you have to think, oh, poor them - they're chained to this horrible addiction that controls their life.
That was part of the speech given to me by the doctor who administered the accu-pressure thing. and it worked!
Good luck to you!!!

From what my doctor said after 3 days your physical addicition is gone and like eroxgirl said it's pschological now. Just stick with it and keep what she said in her post in mind.

Re: I quit smoking and I need advice
I was a smoker for longer than I'd care to admit but finally quit a few yrs ago, after several failed attempts. I used the patch which worked really well, but slipped a few times when I was out at bars with my friends.
What finally made me stop was avoiding any trigger that made me want one anymore....my old friends (temporarily) bars, drinking, etc. Once you're in the habit of not smoking it will be easier to do those things.
Good luck to you and congratulations!!!

Re: I quit smoking and I need advice
I am doing it too, but I am taking Welbutrin to help with the withdrawal, but it still takes a lot of talks with myself. As Eroxgirl has said, I am constantly telling myself that this is going to kill me. We are now active TTC and I keep telling myself I want to be here to see my kids grow up, get married and get to watch my grandchildren grow up as well. That will not happen if I keep smoking. But yes, I miss it so much. It takes a lot of will. YOU CAN DO IT!!!
It took me years...but I did not do cold turkey...I went from Reds (in college) - to mediums...to lights...to ultra lights (when I had that first ultra light I wanted to throw the pack out...it was light sucking in air - so I went back to lights...but was able to finally make the transition)
during the same time...I cut down the amount as well...in my last 'phase' I was smoking only after work (stress reliever) and at bars...
then I stopped after work...and now I have stopped inside bars (I will still smoke a few if I am in an outside bar - but feel this isn't a problem since it is few and far between)
I really only get cravings when I drink now...and I will give in every now and then...but I also gets pangs of disgust when I see others smoking now...its a strange situation...but I am happy at this point

I get this a little too and I feel like a hypocrite after smoking for so many years. I vowed to never be one of those really obnoxious ex-smokers!
I know one guy that wanted to get a 2' x 3' metal sign to hang in his house that said no smoking. I almost flipped when I found out he used to smoke

Congratulations - that is great. I never smoked but my FI has quit and sucking on lollipops helped him, and sunflower seeds to. Remember you can do it!

Congrats. Good Luck, you can do it. Maybe carry around a picture of yucky lungs and look at it everytime you want one? Think about seeing your grandchildren grow up.

Re: I quit smoking and I need advice
Congratulations and good luck...I smoked for 11 years. I started when I was 13. It took me 8 times to finally quit. The last time I did it cold turkey. I had to give up going to bars and clubs and hanging out with specific people for a while, but it was worth it. I havent smoked a cigarette in 8 years and I do not miss it at all
