........but I haven't gotten my ring appraised or insured yet. Can someone explain what I need to do? Do I go somewhere special to get it appraised or any place that advertises appraisals? How do I go about getting insurance for it?

The jeweler who made my ring appraised it for us for free, so I'm not sure how that part of it works. But, in terms of insurance....I know a lot of girls put it on their renters or home owners insurance. My parents put my e. ring under their home owners ins. since neither FH nor I are renting. I've heard some girls say that you can put it under your auto insurance? And that there are insurances specifically for jewelry? But I'm not too sure about that. There are a bunch of posts on this though....try doing a search for insuring engagement ring or something. But IMO, definitely a good idea to insure it asap.

In regards to insurance, its typical for the woman to take out insurance on the ring after its given to them, however since you are going to be travelling with it, here are a few suggestions:

After you get it apraised at Macy’s, you take out insurance on the ring.
- You can usually get insurance at national banks. I know Bank of America, insures personal items (jewelry, etc).
- You can also call your car insurance company is see if they offer personal item insurance. I think one of the top firms does (StateFarm or Allstate or something.. lol I can’t recall.
http://www.jewelersmutual.com/ is another credited source.

I’m not an insurance expert but if I recall its cost is determined one of 2 ways… its either (1) relative to the worth of the item, which is were the apprasial comes in handy (i.e. 1% of the appraised worth) or (2) a flat rate.

I havent insured mine yet either. BUt we're waiting till we buy the house to add it on to our home owners insurance policy.
I think thats what you can also do, add it to your home or rental insurance policy.

Good morning,

Matt got the ring appraised by the jeweler he bought the ring from. I didn't get the ring insured though until we bought our house - then I put it on our house insurance. If you plan on buying soon - just wait until then.

p.s. always get your insurance for the HIGHEST appraised worth. not what was paid for it!!

I didnt get my ring insured yet either. You should always bring your rings to the jeweler FH bought the ring from. They should include the appraisal for free but you should also go to someone else to get it appraised to make sure the jeweler didn't sell FH a lemon. I kept having dreams that the jeweler sold my FH a CZ. Scary nightmare. But both appraisals came with in $2000 of each other so I guess I am ok. Good luck!!!!!!

The jeweler FH bought the ring at gave him the appraisal automatically...you can have it added to your renters or homeowners insurance policy. You will just need an appraisal with the same name and address on it that are on the policy (we had a problem with this b/c it had FH's name & address from when he bought the ring on it and by the time he gave it to me he had moved)...
