I think I dislike my vet

I think I dislike my vet

It's a 2 person practice and I have always used one of the guys, but yesterday I saw the other guy for the first time. They just both seem greedy and expensive. I asked if they participate in the Friends of Animals spaying program and the guy said (just like it was one word)

'nosorrywedon'tparticipateinthat' and then just moved on. then, I had to PULL info about spaying out of him. Like, now that he knows I'm going elsewhere, he doesn't want to talk to me about it. I had to ask 'what age' 'why those age frames' 'is 5 months too early?'

They keep pushing us to do stool tests, over and over and over again. We only did one, she didn't have worms, we keep medicating her against worms, so why should I keep doing all of these stool tests?

I just feel like it's all about charging us to the max over there!

This happened w/ the first vet we went to. Needless to say, we NEVER went back. They tried to get us to pay for all these tests and even fed Chewie a $25 pill w/ out asking us if it was ok! We were like, what is that and how much? He said it's for ticks(I think thats what it was) but I don't know the price. They also handed us toothpaste and toothbrush, w/ us thinking it's a free sample and they wound up charging us $25 for it.

just from hearing stories about your vet i think you can find someone better out there..... youre gonna have her for the next 15 years or so.. so you should really get someone you feel comfortable with. i hope it all works out

I agree, your posts from this vet from the start seemed a bit too pricey for what was being done. Shop around or ask friends which vet they go to - Even with all the costs that come along with being a dog owner, this is way too much money to be spending! Especially if you are not happy or feel that they don't have your pet's best interest at heart - I would def. find another vet!

$25 for the toothbrush and toothpaste?

Most places charge around $4-5 for a sample pack of the doogie toothbrush and toothpaste, and arond $8-$10 for the regular size. Is it possible that in the bill they lumped together a few items under a miscelaneous that included the toothbrush and toothpaste?
Sounds strange...maybe there's an explanation....maybe not.

It depends on what you are medicating your dog against...I'm assuming you are talking about the heartworm preventative that most dogs are on...but there are some parasites that can be found in stool that people don't medicate dogs against, ie. some rabbit stool has certain parasites that dogs can pick up if they eat it, and so on. Whenever a dog comes in for a yearly, my DH always asks the client to bring in their dog's stool sample, to check and see if there are any parasites, it's part of the routine physical...so don't feel that he's ripping you off with the stool sample, this is pretty normal with many practices.

However, if you have an uncomfortable vibe with your vets, then totally switch, you shouldn't have to deal with a practice that you don't like...even if it's just a personality clash thing...you should use someone you feel totally comfortable with.

Ask some local people who they think is a great vet., and ask a lot of people.

I hope you find a veterinarian that you like

Nope, it was just a toothbrush and toothpaste. I saw the same one in Stop and Shop for $5!

I would be fine if it was only on an annual basis, but we did the test at 8 weeks of age. She is only 16 weeks now and they have wanted to do it 2 more times already. I think that seems excessive. And, now I'm worried that she's being over medicated as well

Whenever you are in doubt, like here, feeling that she's overmedicated, it's definately time for a second opinion. Good luck, I hope things work out.
