She is almost 10 and has trouble walking up stairs, jumping on the bed and sitting.
Can anything be done for this?
I think I should take her to the vet but I'm not sure what can be done.
It's so sad

What kind of dog is she? she may have hip displaysia... you should DEFINATLY take her to the vet.. cause if anything, they can at least give her meds to ease the pain a little...

Re: I think my dog has arthritis
She is a Shepard mutt. She doesn't seem to be in any pain at all. She just kind of hops up the stairs and looks at the bed getting ready to jump but can't. I just don't want it to get worse.
UGG....I hate going to the vet ......it's so $$$$$$$
I would I know if it were the hip thing?

Re: I think my dog has arthritis
My dog used to have arthritis and the vet gave him medicine but the medicine was only a temporary fix.In other words,it was making him feel better but was doing damage to his liver. So we used to give him pet vitamins for arthritis and also special dog food with vitamins & it really helped him a lot.

My dog is 5 and she has arthritis, and the doctor put her on cosomine and somrhitng else, I can't remember the name, ans she is doing so much better, she is back to her old self, she can't jump on high beds anymore, but she can run around and jump almost like she used to.

Re: I think my dog has arthritis
Some dogs' livers are not affected by the medecin, and my vet tests my dog every six months to make sure her liver is okay.

Re: I think my dog has arthritis
Cosequin is excellent for arthritic cats/dogs/humans. I give it to my cat, because he was also having trouble walking up the stairs. You need to get these pills from your local vet.
I also take a human cosequin for my knee, and it has helped me greatly!
There are options for arthritic animals!!!

The Cosequin is in the same family as the glucosime, and cosimine (sp?).

Re: I think my dog has arthritis
My FI (a veternarian) proscribes it all the time, but be sure to have your vet do a full work up to be sure there is no other problems (x-rays, maybe some bloods).
Hope your dog feels better!

Re: I think my dog has arthritis
we used to give my arthritic labrador the prescription Rymadil, but it was tough on her liver so the vet had us buy ascriptin - over the counter product that is super asprin with a maalox coating - it did wonders to help her - she got arthritis at 9 and lived to the ripe old age of 16!! I miss her!!
