As some of you know we adopted Sandy who had been found by another LIW member who loved her but couldn't keep her.
She is soooo cute but is afraid of everything and everyone. Sometimes we cant even tell if she is happy or not. The only time she wags her tail is when I come home from work.
Last night was not to good with her. We went to take her out for a walk and she freaked. Walking very low to the ground with her tail between her legs & trembling. We figured out that she only likes to go for walks when its dark out. She managed to get out of her collar which Shiba Inus are famous for, my fault I should have put her harness on. I did get her back but she was terrified.
I wish I could get her to come out of her shell some more. Is there anything I can do?

We think she may have been. But we really don't know her history. She is afraid of men esp if they are wearing a base ball hat.

OMG that breaks my heart. I never had a dog, but I think the best thing to do is to be patient with her and let her come to you when she learns to trust you. That is so sad...how old is she?

Awwwwwwww, well realize that you rescued her. Did the person who gave her to you tell you anything about her? How long did they have her, etc.?
I would speak to the vet and see what you can do to earn her trust faster.

Just keep loving her!!! That's the only advice I have!
But also talk to your vet, they may have some advice.

Was the ground wet when you were walking Sandy? My dog Wiggles refuses to walk outside when it rains (or snows) and walks exactly the way you described Sandy's walk. Maybe it can be as simple as that??

That sounds like abuse for sure
Talk to the vet & try to get some suggestions. When I first got Hans (my Mini-Pin that lives with my mom) he was abandoned, so he would freak every time he had to get into a car (he was thrown out of a moving car on the side of the road). The vet said to just take *baby steps* and try to acclamate him to getting in the car. We would just sit in the car & play music (& I gave him treats thoughout the process), the take small trips, then take longer trips to visit people, then just cruise around. he eventully got used to beign in the car & he even began to like it!
