So we are moving into our new house in about a month and we really want a puppy. Our yard is not large, but we have a decent amount of space and we don't want a dog that sheds a lot either. I'd like something medium size that is active but also good with kids and other people. Anybody have any suggestions or tips as far as training a pup?

Re: I want a puppy!!
You can do a google on 'best dogs for me' kind of search.
I did that because I have allergies. (best dog for allergies!!!)
Those websites ask you a series of question about your liking and lifestyle. Then it comes up with the 'best' dogs for you.

Def do a lot of research, Puppies are a lot of work. Please adopt!! Don't buy one from a pet store. Check out petfinders .com and browse there.

We did not get our dog yet.
I think I want a cockapoo. FH wants a pug. Our house is relativelly small and we don't have time for a dog who requires a lot of exercise.
I grew up with German Sheperds.

Re: I want a puppy!!
Weve always had greyhounds and whippets. The whippets are a medium soze, they barely shed, they are GREAT with kids, very friendly, dont eat much, my family has trained them really well. They arent one of those constantly barking dogs.. They only bark for a second when a stranger comes to the door. Really theyre pretty great.
I dont know if Id get one myself only because Ive had them my whole life.. if that makes any sense.

Re: I want a puppy!!
we looove our dog, im so glad we got him!! we actually got him in the spring and I took a few days off to help get him used the house. i don't think it would be mean to get a puppy with the hours you have, but he may not be able to 'hold it' all day when she/he is very little. we kept our puppy in the kitchen when he was little during the day. its a lot of work when they are little, but its soooo worth it! we have a lab, feel free to FM me with any questions!

we are considering getting a lab since they are supposed to be smart, friendly and good with kids. We also like beagles for the same reason but they bark too much i think. We'll just be moving into our house this summer and I don't want to make enemies in the neighborhood righ off the bat
We've never had a dog, so we dont know much about training them, any helpful hints?

Re: I want a puppy!!
We both love labs but decided against it. They require too much work. They really stay 'puppies' for about 3 years vs. about 1 year with other dogs. But man, do we love them!!!!!!

Re: I want a puppy!!
I have an 8 month old lab and couldn't be happier!! He is so smart, easily trained, gentle with kids, well-behaved and sooooo cuddly!!! All he wants is to be near you and play with you.
If you have a small yard and want a shed-free dog, I don't think a lab is for you. They need a lot of exercise and they shed pretty badly.....
ETA: Sorry about the exercise thing, it was someone else's post......but remember, labs still need a ton of exercise and playtime....

Re: I want a puppy!!
you can find a ton of good info on the web about the different breeds. as far as tips go, just make sure you and your dh have A LOT of time to spend training your pup because they need lots of attention and dedication with the training. i remember it was a lot of hard work and frustration with housebreaking our pomeranian as a puppy. it seemed like she would never be housebroken lol but eventually, she got the hang of doing her business outside only. another tip for whatever breed you get is to stock up on lots of doggie toys! they need to chew and its best they do it on safe toys rather than your belongings. our dog loves american kennel toys (you can find them at target and petco) because they last a long time before she destroys them (if she is able to). the rubber dog toys are easily chewed threw and pieces are swallowed (at least thats been our experience with our pom). good luck! ~lacey

pugs have issues with their faces..you have to be on top of cleaning that ugly mug up (sorry, but they are pretty ugly....so ugly they're cute)...i had a friend who had one....her #1 complaint was constantly cleaning his face and having to take him to the vet over it.

I would prefer a cockapoo or maybe a little french bulldog but I read they have health problems.

Re: I want a puppy!!
I have a cocker spaniel and he is the best dog ever!!!! hes is so good natured and loving I highly reccommend the breed! They do shed a little bit but you could always keep his coat short to help the issue!
