I want to become a teacher???

I am stuck in this dead end job that i feel i am going no where....i never went to school or anything and i am going to be 30 in a month...i feel like I am too old...what do i need to do, how much school, etc. It would be the ideal job for me to teach pre-k or something like that, but like I said i feel like I am too old. I just do not want to be stuck in this job all day.

Re: I want to become a teacher???

do you have any college at all?

my mother decided to go back to school in her 40's to get her Bachellor's and Masters.....it took a while, but she did it...and now she's a school nurse/teacher and happier than ever!

It takes a lot of hard work....but it's definitely possible!

I felt the EXACT same way as you when I was approaching 30!!! I was in a dead end job making no money...just taking the easy road. I already had my bachelors and decided to go back to school for my Masters in Elem. Ed.

It took me 3 years b/c I then decided to do Elem and Spec Ed. I have FINALLY finished all of my classes and I will begin student teaching in a few weeks. I am so nervous and excited at the same time.

I say do it!!!!!!!! If it's something you've always thought about then you must try it or you will always think about it and regret not trying

You're never to old to start an education. Just be aware before you jump into it that most pre-k teachers get paid about $8 or $9/hr. You could go back for early childhood and be certified birth - third grade under the new NYS regs to keep your options open. You could also probably teach pre-k without certification in some schools. Look into it and try it out. Good luck! I left a job I loved and that was financially rewarding to go into teaching. I just graduated.

Re: I want to become a teacher???

i would say go to a local community college and see about starting some classes to get your BA.....it's cheaper that way and they have to accept you.

They should have counsellors there that you can talk to, and they can help you out

I am in the same boat as you - (i am 27) and miserable at my job. I'm in NJ so I decided to study for the Praxis exam, take the test early in 2005 and begin the road to alternate certification. It's all about quality of life! good luck

Re: I want to become a teacher???

as other's have said - you can do it! my step-mother went back in her mid thirties to get a teaching degree and is so happy that she did. I'm not certain, but i think my friend got her associates at suffolk so that she could teach through kindergarten. bust as was said above, pre-school teachers make significantly less.

Best of luck to you though!

Re: I want to become a teacher???

I finally took the plunge and applied for grad school last month. I am now going through the admissions process and will start school next month. Going for Masters in El. Ed/Special Education. it will take some time but better late then never. When I graduateI will be 30. I have been delaying it for years, go for it if it is what you want!! Don't hesitate...you just waste time!

You're never too old. In 10 years or so you'll be 40 regardless of whether or not you go to school, so you should do it now while you have the motivation. And definately get an early childhood ed certification- you'll make more money. Also, if you add on a certification in special ed or ESL, you will be a lot more marketable.

Good luck! It will probably take you 4-6 years full time. 4-5 years for bachelors degree, depending on what certifications you decide on, and an additional 1 for masters (which you can probably do while teaching if you get a full-time job with provisional certification).
