I was always a thin chick...

I was always a thin chick...

until I O.D'd on effedra last year. The doc said I might have some sign of weight gin in th first year, b/c my body 'forgot' how to produce its own adrenaline, etc & that my metabolism would be messed up for a while.

Well, it has been more than one year, I am nicotene & caffine free, do not eat hardly ny sugars(carbs) b/c they give me the jitters, but I am still gaining weight at a ridiculous rate. I have had to buy new sizes/clothes every month since February.

I need to go on a plan & was recommened to Slim in 6, Power90 or South Beach. I am afraid of any diet b/c of how jittery I can get since my body has become so sensitive to stimulants. Can anyone tell me:

a- do any of these work
b- what are side effect?
c- how good are the workouts?

I wanted to join a gym, but I didn't like alot of what I heard from them

TIA

I'm on Weight Watchers and I love it. However I have no idea about your body's chemistry or anything. I'd talk to your doctor about it - he/she knows better than any of us do.

HOWEVER - and I'm sure you'd know this already but whatever - Don't go on any program that's gonna make you take pills.

Those don't work and they aren't going to help in the long run.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!

I already talked to my doctor & he is very little help.....I am trying to find a good nutritionist, but have not really had the time to search yet.

in your case, i would suggest a nutritist would be your best bet...i dont' know if any one program would be best....maybe a combination of things

Have you had a complete checkup? It's possible you might have an underactive thyroid. But, it could also be your metabolism like the doctor said. It couldn't hurt to get some bloodwork done though.
And, how many calories are you eating? There's no need to go on any kind of diet if you just eat properly (and eat the right amount of calories); lots of veggies, clean proteins, complex carbs......
And of course exercise always helps
You need to build some muscle to rev your metabolism back up.

I've heard great things about South beach, but I dunno. I don't have personal experience with it.

Clean proteins are things like chicken, fish, turkey, soy - proteins that are low in fat saturated fat.

You might find South Beach a good solution. The first two weeks are really tough with no carbs at all, but once you get into it, it's not bad at all. It's all healthy food...lots of salads, veggies, lean protein and cheeses.

Melani,

I would go bakc to the doctor and ask him what diet is best for you. If you're off sugar/carbs you should be losing a little.

He'd probably recommend either the diabetics diet (which is what the original WW diet was based on years ago) or WW.

But maybe he'll also test your blood for hypo or hyper glycemia (can't remember which makes you gain) or soemthing else that might make you gain weight.

I'm glad to hear you're OK after the ephedra OD - that stuff scared me after I took it once and my heart raced for hours.

My body does not produce adrenalin either. You blow up like a balloon for a little bit. But it is nothing the treadmill and sit ups cant fix! Did you ask the doc prior to going on a diet? Because I am supposed to ask first. I also have to take pills. You need to be berry careful.

Mary & Mrs. Kin May

Mary- ephedra is scary...scared me enough to cut all stimulants (processed sugar, caffeine, tobacco) for the last year.

I did go back to the Dr. he said that South Beach is ok as long as I maintain fiber & natural fruit sugars after the first two weeks. He said if I feel like I ave water weight gain to see him about a diuretic.

I have been doing some light cardio & it is preventing me from getting bigger, but not really slimming me down at all. Dr. said after a few weeks on the diet, if my blood levels and heart rate look OK, then I can start more intensive workouts again. I told him I wanted to do the slim in 6...he said he doesn't know it too well, and suggested pilate and yoga....so I have been looking for a gym with this in my area.

Thanks for all the advice & FMs
