I was just googled...

I was just googled...

Someone I knew briefly in college (7 or 8 years ago) just e-mailed me out of the blue. He said he googled me to see what I've been up to since college. He practically knew everything about me!

It is pretty disconcerting, to say the least. In my response I'm trying to be friendly, while maintaining whatever amount of privacy I have left.

Has this happened to anyone else? Or, have you ever gotten in touch with someone after googling them? What happened?

Do you have a website about yourself?

He cannot just 'google' you and find out your email address unless it's out there somewhere.

He can get your address, because google does act like a white pages, but you can opt out of that on google.

Once I was written about in an HR publication and they included my email address and lots of people found me that way - I had to call to ask the pub to take it off the article.

I googled myself a while ago and I found lots and lots. A MS Walk I participated in, a picture of me from the Philadelphia Inquirer when I was 4 years old at the Franklin Institute, articles I wrote for my college paper, friends' websites, etc.

It's amazing what people can find out about you. Scary.

Re: I was just googled...

My e-mail address is listed on my office's web site, plus I've done some other stuff that is listed on public databases. It's not hard to find out stuff about people, but it's just surprising to me that someone would go out of their way to contact someone they lost touch with so long ago. I mean, if we were meant to be friends, it seems like we would have kept in touch all this time...

I've googled people from time to time, but not gotten in touch with them. My coworker made me join freindster & I looked up peoplw & had 1 name match but w/ no picture I wasn't sure so I didn't contact him.

One friend from college found me on Friendster & I thought it was cool, but our communication faded out again as it did after college.

I googled myself, but my name is the same as a fairly well-known (but not super-famous) poet, and it's not uncommon, obviously. I found lots of pages but nothing about me specifically.

Re: I was just googled...

Two days before my wedding my first love emailed me to congratulate me on my upcoming wedding. He had googled my name and knew about some of the shows that I have done, where I work, DH's first name. It was kinda freaky. I am a pretty private person and to know that that much info is out there is unsettling.

I'm sorry, I thought you were upset that someone could find you on google, not that someone you haven't talked to in ages tried to find you.

Once in awhile I get bored and google some people I knew in hs or college but I would never email them.

Only if they were on classmates.com but that website is there for that purpose.
