Do most people hire the DJ for the 4 hour reception or the reception and cocktail hour? Also do you need to hire the DJ for the ceremony? I know these questions sound silly, but Im not sure and before I make decisions about this I thought I would ask the experts. Thank you.

If your ceremony is not at the same place as the reception - definitely no DJ. If at the same place, I still dont think so but that I am not sure of. You usually also do not have the DJ at the cocktail hour, however, we will b/c the cocktail hour and the rest of the night are in the same room- so the party starts right away. Some people hire a band or a simple singer jsut for the cocktail hour.
Hopefully, you will get a better expert than me to also respond.
Hope this helped a little though!

I am getting married at the hall, and I got a special package from my dj. It is ceremony, cocktail hour and 4 hour reception. But low and behold, I changed my mind and hired a pianist for the ceremony and cocktail hour. I wanted soft background music, instead of the dj. It is really personal preferance. Good Luck

I really don't know if you are getting married at the hall, because we didn't. But here is what we did.
Got married at church. Chuch provided organist and singer.
Had DJ at cocktail hour and reception. At cocktail hour, DJ only had to play a CD that we provided for him. (This is not normal, we just wanted what we wanted, and we already had it on CD.) Then he worked the reception like it was nobody's business.

Im getting married at the hall.
My DJ automatically includes the cocktail hour with the reception. I added on the ceremony. This way he starts playing music half hour before I come walkin... gives people something to chat and mingle with.
Then SILENCE!!! It's all about the drama! hehe. No seriously... the music will stop and then the FH and Best Man will walk out. That should shut people up. If not there will be hell to pay. Then my music starts and the progressional begins.
So Im actually getting an hour or so for the ceremony, another hour for the cocktails.. then the 4 hour reception.. From 11am through 5pm. 6 hours.
Wow.. come to think of it.. I got a GREAT price for 6 hours and three types of music!!!

We had our ceremony at the reception hall so the DJ provided music for the entire event. They played our selected pieces during the ceremony then they were supposed to play quiet tunes during the cocktail hour (can't remember if they did or not) and then the 4 hour reception.
If we had our ceremony someplace else I would have only hired the DJ for the 4 hour reception.

We are not getting married at the hall. The DJ will play for cocktail hour and 4 hours for reception.

Mine is 5 hours of music. I do not need them for the cocktail but I am having a 5 hour reception (actually 6 1/2 hour reception: 1/2 hour precocktail, hour cocktail hour and 5 hour reception).

I am getting married at the same place as the reception and I hired a harpist for 1 hour. Some before music, ceremony music, and after music. Then my DJ will take over for the cocktail hour and reception.

I hired my dj for the ceremony, cocktail hr. and reception. I was going to hire someone else to do the ceremony and cocktail hour but decided to save some money instead.
