DEAR HARRIETTE: My wife of six months announced that 'We're pregnant' a few weeks ago and I haven't be able to sleep since. Don't get me wrong -- I love my wife dearly and I have been very pleased with the progress of our relationship as a married couple, but I honestly don't think that we are ready for children. It's not that I want her to have an abortion, but I thought that we would spend maybe two or three years, just us, together. She seems so pleased that this baby is on the way. Should I say something to her?

Re: I wonder if this a LIW couple???
I think the guy sounds like a creep - if he didn't want a baby, then HE should have taken precautions against it instead of leaving it all up to her. Sounds selfish to me, they're married for Christ's sake!! Not kiddies in High School.

I hear ya. He shouldn't be writing to the NY Daily News and telling them about his problem. He should me a man and tell her how he feels about the pregnancy. One word for this guy... Loser!

I don't think we know enough about the situation to judge really. She could be a real crazy, too!

Your absolutely right. But I don't think people should air their dirty laundry in the news papers. Thats all.

I agree.. this guy sounds like an A$$.. what did he think would happen when he had sex? Nothing? It's very sad that he feels this way and I feel terrible that he's keeping his feelings from his wife. It could really cause problems in the long run later on, he might start resenting her and the baby.
After reading that, I feel really blessed that my DH wanted to have a baby more than I did and has been so excited with every step of the way so far.

I agree. For all we know they were using protection and maybe something went wrong. It does happen. And they could be young and just not ready for kids.
Although I don't think writing to a newspaper is the proper way of handling the situation...

Coincidentally, what did good ol' Ms. Cole say to this guy?

Babies rarely come when we're ready for them, yet the blessings they bring usually wipe all our doubts away. Still, you are normal to be feeling apprehensive. Women often share that anxiety even when they have longed for kids. Definitely talk to your wife about your feelings. Tell her you're concerned about what your life together will be like after the baby comes. Make time now to define your values and enjoy each other's company. Be supportive of your wife as you pay attention to your own feelings. Many couples take mini-vacations during pregnancy (with the doctor's permission) so that they can be close. As time passes, your worries should subside. To ensure that you maintain quality couple time, reserve one night a week as your date night. Begin enjoying that time together now. Then, after the baby comes, even if your date is taking a walk together around the block, it will be your time!

I think she was a lot nicer than I would have been.
