do you give them a present when they come home or do you wait until they have some sort of reception? FH's brother just eloped in Puerto Rico, i don't know if I'm supposed to have a gift for them or what.

Give a gift right away. If someone elopes, I just assume there may be no party, in which case, I'd send a gift immediately.

I think that sounds good also.
I have actually been wondering the same thing. My (male) cousin eloped at the end of January. I immediately sent them a card but have been holding off on a present. My main problem is that none of us have met his new wife, and I really have no idea what to get them. So I've been holding off for the party. Maybe they'll register.

Are they planning on having a party? I would probably give it to them when they get back. If they have a party instead of giving a gift maybe you can help them out with different things, plus they can put the gift $ towards the party!

They may not have a party or more likely the money to have one if they eloped. I would give to them when they come back.
