it's not a rule, it is a preference. we have 2 widows on our invite list and both prefer Ms.

But I know some widows still go by Mrs.

I asked my MIL about her guests who are widowed and she said they preferred Mrs

widowed should read
mrs. john doe(husbands name)
but my grandmas dont go by the husbands name no more so i did
mrs. jane doe(married last name)

I would go with Mrs. as well, unless I was told they preferred otherwise.

If they are still single and not dating I put Mrs.
I put Ms. on a few, for women I know who date.

Sadly, my mother is a recent widow. Dad passed on July 9th. She told me that as long as she uses my father's last name, she would like to be called either:

#1
MRS. (Her first name)(Dad's last name)
OR
#2
MRS. (Dad's first and last name)

We are using the SECOND option when we print and order the wedding invitations in order to honor my father's memory as my parents were going to be making our wedding.

I think each person is different. I would do it on a person to person basis.
