I have been thinking about this alot lately since my bosses don't like to give long periods of time off.......
If your boss wouldn't let you take off time around the wedding and honeymoon as you need to (a day or 2 before wedding and however long your HM is)...would you quit because its a huge lifetime event, or work around what your boss allows?
Just curious

I actually was talking to FH about this over the weekend. I would quit. I like my job, but I don't LOVE it.

If that was me in the situation, I would start looking for a new job. I wouldn't want to work for someone who is that disrespectful. It will only get worse from the wedding. Whenever you have kids, he'll probably give you a hard time about maternity leave, and then whenever your child gets sick and you have to be home, etc. etc. he will never understand.

I would just take the time off whether approved or not. They could fire me if they didnt like it...I wouldnt want to work for a company like that anyways.

I would work around it. Now's NOT the time to go quitting your job without a back up plan. And monetary gifts from the wedding do not count as a back up plan.
ETA: Though I agree with Marjorie, I'd definitely start looking for a new job ASAP.

Re: If work got in the way of your wedding
I would never quit my job, its not just a job its my career and esp with the economy the way it i I can't afford to quit b/c i do not have enough vacation days
I am scheduling my real HM in March because of my company's vacation day policy. I only get so many days and there is nothing i can do. I'll be able to take a a week off before and a week after and we'll go on a mini moon.

I don't want to work for someone who thinks that work is more important the the big, special events in life, bc I don't think that way.

Re: If work got in the way of your wedding
I would try to work around it. I couldn't lose my job right now. I know that I will have the 2 weeks off for my honeymoon. I am not sure about the few days before and after. But I will find out on Friday because I am asking my boss

my job/career takes always precedence, so I would just work with what I was given. as is I am right now not gonna take more than a week off total.

Re: If work got in the way of your wedding
You usually know your company's policy while planning your wedding so I would work around it. With my job I am very lucky, i can carry over to the next year time that I dont use this year. So right now I have 9 days that i am gonna carry over and by the time I get married I will have another 10 days total of 19 days to use next year.

Re: If work got in the way of your wedding
I definitely thought a lot about this, but luckily my job gave me 3 weeks off (we get 4 weeks a year at my level). If they did not, I would have given 2 weeks notice before I wanted be out, gotten paid for 4 weeks vacation, and then looked for a job after the hm. This was my brilliant idea - thank GOD I didn't have to actually go through with it. I prob would have weenied out too.

Re: If work got in the way of your wedding
Well, given that (a) I get 4 weeks vacation and (b) I usually have to work all of the holidays even when our office is closed (MLK, Presidents, Good Friday, Columbus), I am taking off 2+ weeks no matter what!!!

Re: If work got in the way of your wedding
we have a certain amount of time off and can be taken whenever. i did, however, speak with my boss already to ask him if its ok, and to giev him a heads up that it will be a long time. and he said he was fine with it, that its a huge event in my life and they arent going to tell me when and how long i can take off for.
