We went to Playa del Carmen. Loved it!! I stood at Royal Hideaway. Highly recommend. More info in my review.

The Riviera Maya (also known as the Yucatan Peninsula) is the 'towns' that the Mayans lived in around the beach...hence the term 'Riviera' they are:
Cancun Playa del Carmen Akumal Cozumel Tulum and others...see map below...the difference is that some parts face the Caribean Sea (Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel) and others have lagoons or face the Gulf

Ditto for Secrets Excellence. We originally looked into Occidental Playa del Car (where Sasha went) but then switched to Secrets Excellence b/c of Wilma.

Aventura Spa Palace... it was more affordable for us...

We are staying at Aventura Spa Palace (it's one of the Palace Resorts). We heard great things about Secrets also, but decided on Aventura because of the tour package that was included.

I have been to the Riu... fantastic!
For the ladies visiting Playa del Carmen - it is truly stunning. I will definitely go back. I went with a friend but plan on returning w/ FH.
The beach is great and the town is so quaint - we felt safe walking around and shopping locally!
