If You Change Your Name?

My FH has less-than-great credit, while mine is very good. Does anyone know if his bad credit will affect mine if I take his name?

Regretfully I think when you marry someone there credit does affect the other. BUt lets see what others have to say. They may know for a FACT.

I don't think your credit will be affected solely by taking your FI's name. I think his credit score can affect your ability to take out a mortgage together regardless of whether you take his name.

I don;t think taking a name or not has anything to do with it. I believe once you're married your credit is linked no matter what.

Nope: here's the 411 from CNN.com

Myth: When you get married your credit scores are merged. 'People think once you're married your credit information gets mixed,' said Sjoblad. But, your good or bad credit is yours and yours only 'til death do you part. When you open accounts jointly, though, that information will be reflected on each of your credit reports, for better or for worse.

I work in mtg banking..no your credit will not be affected.. your fico score is based on the way you pay your debts.. And he has a differant score.. When you go for a loan they use the person that makes the most money middle fico Score....
