If you had *someone else* block additional hotel rooms for you...
The hotel we blocked rooms at only allows us to block a max of 20 rooms. Problem: we have about 80 OOT guests if not more. My MOH offered to call the hotel and block rooms under her name, which is great. BUT I'm wondering how this will work for OOT guest bags? I'm sure it will be obvious what we did when I show up with bags for guests that are with either the 'Smith' or 'Jones' block.
If you had someone else block additional rooms for you at the same hotel, how did you do it? Did they lie and say it was for their own wedding? Did the hotel get mad? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Well maybe you can have the add 10 rooms everytime you get down to 10, so there would always be 20 rooms available at a time. I remember hotels offering to do this when I looked around. Worst case scenario, you will have to stay on top of them and call once a weekto see how many rooms are still available and add to the block when necessary.

We also have many out of town guests. Our hotel would not let us block more than 20 rooms(at a time). That's the key. If you fill up the one block of 20 rooms, you can get another block. I wouldn't worry about the hotel being mad-at that point what can they do? It just might be difficult to tell your guests what to block the rooms under if you use different names. Normally they say your names to get the group rate. Maybe, you can have family book early since it would be weird to ask others to do so and then they can give you another block. We've had so many problems with the hotel and that should be the easy part!

Thanks for your suggestions! My MOH is actually a friend from college, so all our OOT college friends know her last name. I'd just email them to tell them to block under her name. I agree though that this starts to make it a little complicated!
I just called and they said that they do offer a 2nd block if the first one fills up BUT they didn't have the rooms available to do that for me. So, would that mean that if my MOH called, they wouldn't have a block available for her either?

It sounds like they may be short on rooms for your night. But I would have your MOH call and pretend to be another bride and see what they say. If they would let her block, then go ahead, have her do it and then tell your college friends. Where did you block rooms again?

OK, as a hotel manager, I completely understand the whole limit on the number of rooms blocked. I can't tell you how many times I allowed people to block more than ten and then people either don't book them or God Forbid, they canceled the wedding. Yes it has happened more than once! I end up with an empty house as a result.
My place has a policy of requesting payment in advance, 7 days from the day the reservation is made. That way, once all ten rooms are reserved and paid for, I will gladly add 10 more. Maybe you can work a deal like that with your hotel.
To be honest. I would figure it out if two blocks were made for the same wedding. Especially when the OOT guest bags arrive. It leaves me and my desk staff pretty bent and people don't realize they shouldn't piss off the hotel staff. You'll end up with the worst rooms in the house. Not that that has ever happened in my place
Your best bet is to try and work with them ahead of time. I always make some exceptions and they should too.

Trust me, they can do a lot! Always be nice to your reservationist and front desk people!
I just had another thought and I shouldn't be saying this! Unless you have a special rate, have some of your guest call and make reservations, but tell them not to mention the wedding party name! Just that they are traveling on their own for no special reason!

Re: If you had *someone else* block additional hotel rooms for you...
nferrandi-- I blocked at the Radisson New Rochelle. They gave us a tour of the rooms and they were pretty nice. I think we're having our RD in that Cuban/Asian restaurant off the lobby. The food is so good!
wood2be-- Thanks so much for giving the hotelier perspective. I was seriously concerned about what they would do when I show up with all the OOT bags!
I think what I might do is email my college friends and tell them to book at the reduced rate in the block since they're the ones who need the discount the most! It's $139 a night with our block and I think $160 otherwise. Not great, but not awful I suppose. Thanks for your help!

I really shouldn't be giving this information out but I can't resist
Have the guest call and make the reservation without using your name. Then the day before they check in, tell them to call and confirm the reservation and happen to mention that they know other guests are paying a lower rate and they should be entitled to that rate as well. If the hotel is smart, they will not let a reservation go the day before because they may not fill the room
No one better try this at my place

Once your block is full, the hotel should release more rooms and increase the block.

If you are sure that you will have so many out of towners than the hotel will usually ask for you to hold f a percentage of them via credit card. If you hold twenty and know for sure at least 10 will be booking than hold 10 rooms via credit card and the remaining 20 will be held at no charge. Once the 10 are booked your cc will be released.
