How short was the shortest person in your bridal party? I have someone who is 4'9' with heels she will be approx 5'.
I have been told some dresses cannot be altered for someone that short if i want to select a mermaid dress. Have any of you had this issue and was there a mermaid dress that was altered for something like this.
Please help

Re: If you have selected a Mermaid Bridesmaid dress
I was told the same thing. I think it is because of the flare of the mermaid dress and where it will hit a person that short. I was told I could get a-line dresses and then have them altered to mermaid dresses, but of course that is more money. If the dress you are looking at also comes in a-line maybe the short bridesmaid can order that one and have it altered to a mermaid if you really want that style. Or maybe she can wear higher heels?

Don't do it. My MOH is actually getting married about 2 weeks after me and her dream was a mermaid gown. Hoever she is 4'10 inches tall with short legs and when she tried on the gowns, it was horrible because honestly, you really have to be at least 5'6 without heels ot pull this off. if she wore higher heels to make it work, she'd be on stripper spikes! I am 5'6 with a short torso but very long legs and when I tried on a mermaid gown without heels, I looked stumpy. You won't get that beautiful 'bell shape' flare at the bottom because they would have to hem it and it would ruin the shape. The only thing that can be done without spending oodles of extra moola to get it made to to order to ehr measurements (my mother sews) is to take the dress in at the waist if it has a seam and to 'pull it up' and tuck it in so it sits properly. But it is VERY costly and JMO but it's a bit unfair to choose a dress that one of the girls you asked to be in your party, cannot wear simply because she is vertically challenged. JMO. How about going with a modified a-line if you like the mermaid style? In my album of first fitting, you can see my wedding gown. Its a modified A which means it fits snugger to the hips anf then flares giving a straight line as opposed to flare at the waist.

Re: If you have selected a Mermaid Bridesmaid dress
Thanx for your help ladies. I have not asked her to be in the bridal party but since i am a bit anal i didnt want to have the situation that i asked then selected a mermaid dress and then come to realize that is a no no because of her height. I dont want to make her feel like the only reason why i cant have that style dress for the girls is becuase she is short. She is a very good friend so since this style dress is not good for my bridal party i will have to find another one.
If you guys can please post your bridesmaids dresses so i can get some ideas.
THanxxxx so much ladies!!!!

thats good! if she is a very good friend, the BM dresses you want shouldn't keep you from asking her to be in the wedding..... and actually another dress style might be better for the other girls in the party, too.... the mermaid style is one that doesn't look great on everybody i like a line dresses, and empire waist is nice, too... thats what my girls had , and it looked nice on the shorter and taller girls

Re: If you have selected a Mermaid Bridesmaid dress
I'm only 5'1 and wore a mermaid for my prom 4 years ago that i bought at estelles. I had to shorten it alittle and it had a small train. If i do say so myself, i looked very nice I think if she is petit it will be ok because you will just need to get a small size. But, if she is a bit on the heavier side and will need to get a bigger size to fit her on top and therefore needing to chop off a bunch on the bottom, the shape will disappear. HTH

Re: If you have selected a Mermaid Bridesmaid dress
she is petite. I have explained this to the bridal stores i called to ask them about the dresses i liked and they tell me she will lose the whole look of the dress. Mermaid will look good on all my girls but my only issue is the height here.
I am glad i am researching this before we go shopping because i would hate for this to happen and then she feel bad that i cant pick a mermaid dress because the seamstresses are saying she is to short for it.
Do you have a pic of yourself in that dress? If so do you mind posting it????

Re: If you have selected a Mermaid Bridesmaid dress
You know what, now that i'm looking back at the pics, it looks more like a sheath/mermaid dress... It was tight around the booty but wasn't a dramatic mermaid..... Ok, i guess its up to you then. I would think though that if you ordered a size 0-2 it would look normal on her. If you have your heart set on it why don't you go to the store with just her to see what it looks like? I've heard advice like 'if you have a bm that will be hard to shop for, bring her along with you when you go browsing'.
I know that height is a problem when I go shopping so I tend to avoid long dresses to begin with. You should ask her maybe what shape dresses she knows don't fit her body type.
Sorry, but HTH

Re: If you have selected a Mermaid Bridesmaid dress
Hmm have you considered choosing the fabric you like, a designer whose dresses you like and a color and then allowing all the girls to choose their own dress? My girls are wearing the same derss but in 3 diff colors because for us the issue wasn't body (all thin and tall) but coloring; some are tan and others REALLY pale so red washed one out and made the others look good etc. So we went with pink roange and red and they each chose color that complimented them. But I have seen other brides choose one color and fabric from same deigner then allow girls to choose what flattters them. You can suggest mermaid but if she prefers a sheath in same color and fabric, might be a better way to get most of what you want without sacrficing everything.

So what you are saying is each girl may have a different dress or some may have the same and others not but it is all in the same family because it is all the same fabric and color???
if you have any pics of this i would be interested to see how they came out with everyone in something different.

Yep exactly. I will look through old threads and see what I can come up with. If you look in my album you can see the diff colored thing with the same dress. I'll check around then come back. I know many designers like Alfred Angelo do this now-,ix and match seperates.
These are mine; same dress but diff colors for the BMS and the maid of honor is wearing a completely diff dress by the same designer in the same fabric in the shade of pink of one of the BM's...
MOH Dress-will be in the color of the first BM dress trimmed in ivory ribbon to compliment my gown.

Re: If you have selected a Mermaid Bridesmaid dress
I couldn't get the link to the thread to post but here are some of the pics. What unifies diff dresses are the same color and fabric and then the same bo-k. It also can make your pics look alot better if the girls are flattered by their dresses. I mean, they are our backdrop in a sense and who wnats an ugly backdrop! -grins- I am joking but if they're happy about what they are wearing, they will look happy and the pictires will be even more gorgeous.

Re: If you have selected a Mermaid Bridesmaid dress
Just an fyi someone that I work with was mentioning that she is in a wedding with a Bill Levkoff mermaid style dress- and they are bustling it for the girls- just one button so that when they dance they don't fall- it made sense but I never would have thought of it
