Is he embarrased to tell some people how you met???
Basically everyone my FI knows that we met online.....BUT his obnoxious college friends were told another story. He said that they would never sop making fun of him for it if they knew.

it seems as though the most important people in your life know the truth, so I don't think it's a matter of being embarrased, but rather knowing the low maturity level of his college buddies, who you already characterized as obnoxious.
He was probably just sparing you both more proof of what you already know about the college boys!
I didn't meet my FH online, but it's one of the only ways I talk to him now!

We met online initially about 3 years ago. At first he told his family/cousins we met through friends of friends. But then one night I was out w/ his cousins & told them the story. Everyone knows the truth now.
I think at this point in time, meeting online is not 'freaky' as it may have been initially. More & more people are meeting online.
If he doesn't want to tell his college friends & you don't see them very often, maybe its no big deal, but don't be surprised if it somehow gets out at the wedding or somewhere down the line.
I'd just tell them

Well when I first met his friends from college I guess they didn't know how we met...well some of them atleast...I met them at a Christening and of course one these guys takes the opportunity to ask me how we met as soon as my FI excuses himself to the bathroom....I didn't know what to say....and this guy had the nerve to ask me if we met by getting drunk one night and going home together!!! YEAH NICE FIRST IMPRESSION HUH???

I came across a picture of a handsome guy with a great smile. I clicked on his profile to see that the enjoyed Syracuse Basketball. I'm thinking 'Hey I went there!' We were the same age so I thought maybe we knew each other. I IM'd him through that service because he was online and we struck up an online conversation about Syracuse and the dorms and the bars and stuff. Apparently, we had lived in the same dorm our freshman year. Then I jokingly wrote 'Wouldn't it be funny if we hooked up?' .
He then asks me to get out my freshman face book that shows all of the pictures of incoming freshmen as well as lists their majors. He tells me to look at a certain page number to see if I could match the face on the screen to the face in the book. I didn't know his real name yet, just his screenname. So I am looking at the book and all of a sudden I said 'OH MY G-D! I KNOW YOU!!' It turns out we met at a fraternity party our freshman year of college in 1988. He was my first college hook-up (NO WE DIDN'T DO IT) and the second guy I ever kissed in my life.
We met to satisfy a curiosity. We wanted to see how we turned out after all of these years. I got much thinner and cut my hair and dyed it red. He grew two inches, got LASIK and cut his hair too. There was NO way I'd recognize him from his on-line picture. Ever since that day we have been together. We are now together a year as we plan a life together.

At first FH was FAR from embarrassed. He told everyone we met on JDate. I wanted them to know our story. Now, I make him tell them everything!!!

We weren't embarrassed either. We had both been on match.com for about 6-12 mos and had been dating other people before we found each other, so our friends and family already knew the deal. A couple of years ago I think it was more taboo to meet someone on line, but now it is much more 'accepted.'
My boss also met his fiance on match. It'll be a 2nd marriage for both, and they just got engaged over the weekend. I keep telling him I'm going to turn her onto this web site now!
I'm so addicted to this web site, it's no wonder I met my FH on line!!

Goldi...that is just about one of the sweetest stories i have ever heard!!!
I did not meet my FI online. We have known each other since we were little. So, if you'd like a non online meeter viewpoint....I don't think it's something to be embarrassed of. I was reading some of your experiences dating online and they all sound very nice. And obviously it was a wonderful experience for you because you've met the man you're going to spend the rest of your life with! that's nothing to be embarrassed of! Your FI's friends sound a bit immature. If you are happy, then their opinion really doesn't matter!

I think people forget how many of us have computers at home and how little time we have to date. On-line dating services allow us the opportunities to siphon out undesireable mates. The key to on-line dating is to do it safely. Even though I knew FH from school, I still met up with him in a public place.

I am totally not embarrased that we met online I tell everyone and recommend it to everyone!!! When people who are single meet my FI they are like 'you met him online'? As if they were expecting some weirdo...and then they start doing the online thing too
Its definetely more acceptable than it once was...it has made many people including myself and many of the ladies on here so HAPPY

My sister met her current BF on myspace.com ...
I'm the only family member that knows the truth. She told my family (AND his family) that they met through a friend because she knows my Dad would flip. Dad is a very old-fashioned guy (even though he's only 46).

We were at the beginning until we realized that we each met our soul mate for life. Although I was truthful when I told my coworkers, a different story got around my office -
Since FI worked at COSTCO at the time, someone heard me tell half the story and took on-line to mean on line (as in waiting on the check-out line at COSTCO). I still have to correct people.

We met online and in the beginning I was the one hesitant about telling people but now we tell everyone. It is so common today but if he thinks his buddies will make fun of him your better off not telling them.

I keep saying I want to get eharmony to pay for our wedding... be on the commercial or something. I did get an email from them saying that they would send us a gift from Tiffany's after the wedding!
