IF YOU'RE ALREADY MOVED OUT

IF YOU'RE ALREADY MOVED OUT

Did you take everything? I have to clean out my parents basement tonight and I don't know what to keep and what to throw out. Should I throw out all my college books and papers?

What did you keep and what did you get rid of?

i had this same conversation with my mom just last night!!! I was like, mom, when i move out, can i keep a few boxes here? like old school papers etc. she was like, if you can keep it here, 50 miles away from where you will be living, then you don't need it so throw it out!
jeez...seems like once i am out, i am OUT!!!

When I did move out I did leave alot of stuff at my parents house and then once I would go back I would take stuff little by little and then i finally gave it all away the stuff I didn't need!!

Re: IF YOU'RE ALREADY MOVED OUT

I have so many things at my mother's house...and I moved out almost 3 years ago. I live in a studio in the city, so I couldn't take that much. I know there's stuff she's thrown out over the years, and that's fine....I didn't know about it anyway. Take what you definitely need...Throw out what you definitely don't need, maybe your schoolwork from 5th grade...although I was at my mom's house and there's still some stuff in the guest room from elementary school. If they don't care, just leave it, if they do and you won't be able to make room for 'clutter' then trash it...as much as it sucks to part with some of the stuff...It's like the scene in father of the bride where she's cleaning out her room and can't seem to part with her retainer (love that movie)...I like to go home and look at my old stuff every once in a while..

Re: IF YOU'RE ALREADY MOVED OUT

I've been thinking about that lately, too. I think that we are completely starting from scratch. We're keeping the necessities (clothes, shoes, some underwear, etc), but everything we bring into our place will be new & christened by both of us.

I think that I will even give away a lot of clothes, to start off fresh in our new place. Old college books, and paper, etc... I've kept them, too... but it's been YEARS since I've opened them. It's hard parting with them, because they're like pictures reminding you what you've accomplished, but what it boils down to is that we're not going to use them ever again... so we are parting ways... lol

When in doubt....throw it out!!! I'm not much for clutter....what do you need with the old college books and papers? Sorry....JMO.

I have 5 boxes at my parents that have been there for 4 years. I have no idea what is in them. My mother wants to chuck them.

Toss as much as you can. You really won't even remember what it was you threw away.

Re: IF YOU'RE ALREADY MOVED OUT

My parents always told me to leave whatever I didn't want to throw away in their basement. I am so glad I kept all of my college textbooks and papers because I use them when I teach. I guess I am just not ready to get rid of some stuff

Re: IF YOU'RE ALREADY MOVED OUT

I have very little at my parents house, but I did it gradually.

If you can live without it for a while, then it will be easier to part with it.

A lot of stuff I lef tin my old room i didn't want but didn't know if I could get rid of it, b/c people gave it to, but my mom painted recently, so I threw out most of it. There wa stuff stuff I didn't want , but she insisted on keepignin a box soemwere.

oh well. she can toss it whenever she wants.

I didn't take everything. I have things stored away in boxes in the attic-not too much though. I did take my college books from my major only because I thought I may need them (teacher). Don't throw your books away sell them on ebay or something for $$!

Re: IF YOU'RE ALREADY MOVED OUT

i got this problem too. i live with my grandparents who have a huge house with a huge basement and three extra bedrooms, but still my stuff must leave when i leave, which is this week. i have a piano...where do i put a piano? they told me to get storage, but i tell them storage is an extra hundred bucks a month. and so i am going through it all...right now, it is tchotchkas that i want to put it one or two boxes so when i have a house, i can display them. things like mementos, boxes, little figurines that i can't part with. then i have school books, but i can't toss them b/c i know i will use them again as a teacher. i have stuffed animals, old quilts, pictures, so much stuff. my mom can't help, she lives out east iwth no basement or attic. i wish they would say, here is a space, keep what you need in this space, just don't bring more in. ugh.

Re: IF YOU'RE ALREADY MOVED OUT

I've been out for 10 years and I STILL have stuff there!!

Lately though, we have been having 'Name that Toy' meetings in the attic when I visit my parents - my dad's theory is if I can't remember the stuffed animal's name or a school project's significance I don't need to keep them anymore.

If there are things I do want to keep, I have to take at least one filled tupperware storage container home to put in my attic.

It's kind of a fun system!

I took everything with me when I left. I still have a bunch of things in boxes that I haven't looked at in years in my closet. Honestly unless it has sentimentel value get rid of it. I wish I still didn't have that stuff around and who wants to spend a day going through it?
