My husband and I recently booked a trip to Barbados for our anniversary. I booked a hotel on the west coast (St. James) because that is where the best beaches and the best hotels are, but most of the nightlife and restaurants are on the southern coast (Bridgetown). Is the St. James area really dead at night? Is Bridgetown really that far from St. James? Is it an easy cab ride? Are the beaches on the south coast really that different? Our hotel is totally fabulous, but I'm thinking maybe I should change to something on the south coast. Please help!

Re: If you've been to Barbados, PLEASE HELP ME!
I was just there on a cruise, so I was only in Bridgetown & some place a tour took us to go bike riding.
What I do know, however, is that the beaches ARE different. Part of the Barbados is on the Atlantic Ocean & part is on the Carribean Sea. The part of the Atlantic , is rocky & has a pretty rough current.
People surf on some beaches there, but there is no swimming. Swimming is on the other side--on the calm Carribean sea.
ETA- The west is the calmest & best for sewiming. Teh south is rougher & the north & east & are wher ether is no swimming.
Bridgetown was ok- very urban, crowded--there didn't seem to be a lot of places where there would be nightlife, but it was hard to tell in the daytime.

I wish I could say I've been there - it's on my list! But, I would suggest checking out tripadvisor.com for Barbados as a whole. They usually have great articles and reviews that may give you the info you're looking for.
There seems to be many restaurants in St. James, but Christ CHurch seems to be where most of the nightlife is.

I don't remember what town we were close to, but we stayed at the Fairmont. It was a great trip. I thought they had a lot of nightlife....its not like Cancun though. Its a different type of nightlight. The restaurants were amazing. Its an older, wealthier British crowd. Honestly, it was one of the best and cheapest trips we have ever taken.

One of my BMs is Bajan, I just emailed her your question. As soon as she writes me back I'll post her response.

I'm sorry she hasn't written back yet. As SOON as I hear from her I'll let you know.
She must've gotten bogged down or something, usually she writes me back semi-instantaneously.

Got It!
'OMG I can SO help!
Okay, St James [where my mother grew up] does have the best resorts. Night life however is not reserved to just Bridgetown. In fact there's Court's House, Wholetown, and Speightstown which are all nearby. The strip of hotels along the St James coast are full of things to do as well. They should check with their concierge and see what he or she recommends. Also, the cabs and buses are... interesting. It'd be one hell of a story to tell the kids/grandkids.
I hoped that helped. Fell free to relay more questions if she has any!'

Thank you so much, and thanks to your friend too. I appreciate the help. Glad to hear there is nightlife in my area. About how far away is Bridgetown from St. James? And what exactly does she mean by the cabs are interesting? Does that mean unsafe? LOL. Thanks again.
