My sister wants to upgrade her engagement ring and is planning on trading in her current diamond to put as payment towards a new one. (Yes, *she* is paying for it and not her husband.) I think she'll regret it - she's had that diamond for over 25 years! I'd be very attached to it (I'm already attached to mine and I've only had it for 3 months!) so I would like to ask all the girls that have upgraded their rings by using their original ring as partial payment: have you ever regretted it?

OMG! I could never do that! I am also attached to mine and have only had it for 2 months. I would rather buy a whole new one (like a 3 stone ring) than replace the diamond that my FH bought me.

I'd never do that either. After 25 years, what's the point in that anyway? If she wants a nicer ring, she should get herself an anniversary band /eternity band to wear on the other hand or something like that.

Re: If you've upgraded your e-ring...
I think she's just thinking of trading it in because she needs the extra money to put towards the new one. She doesn't exactly have a sentimental marriage (to put it nicely).
I personally would make it into a pendant or something so I could still have it on my body somehow if I wanted to wear a new/bigger diamond as an 'engagement' ring. Well, maybe not, I think I'd just wait until I had the money to get a new one all together, but I wouldn't even do that, so... But, I digress.
My question though, is not if you would do it, but if you *did* do it, do you regret it?

I went from a solitaire to a band with sidestones. I don't think i could ever change the center stone though. I even kept my solitaire band! I'm going to put an ameythyst in it and wear it on my right hand.

My friend is about to upgrade for her second time! I could never do it though.
