Re: I'm baking a wedding cake!!!

After getting a quote from the bakery for the cake I wanted ($1800) I decided to see how time intesive it really was. I went to AC Moore and bought their fondant ....white and multicolored....and bought the star fondant cutters. I made the cake from scratch and used two 9' cake pans to make it a layer cake. The fondant was a bit of a pain in the butt to get it to drape properly (and I never did get it to do so) but cutting out the stars and putting them on the cake was a lot of fun...kinda like playing with play-do. All in all it was a great experience and cake does come out pretty but I think I'm going to leave it to the professionals!

Wow...that will be hard I think. I love to bake but my FH made me promise I wouldn't try to do my own cake. I get way too stressed out and panic that I won't make things right. And I never finish anything on time. I'm sure you are more organized than me, though! Good luck!

P.S. Here are some pictures of a cake I made for a coworker's baby shower. I went a little (okay, a lot) crazy with it. It took me like a week to make all the little animals out of sugarpaste.

I also added pics of a cake I made for a coworkers wedding sendoff. I made the flowers out of marzipan and petal dust.

Re: I'm baking a wedding cake!!!

if you do a couple round cakes, different sizes, you can stack them to look like a wedding cake. bakeries use wooden sticks usually in each layer to add support (which are taken out before you cut to eat of course), that way the cakes won't collapse into each other. also, you can probably find a recipe for wedding buttercream (it's thicker so you can work with it) on foodnetwork.com or epicurious.com - they're both good sites for recipes. and, if you're up for decorating, you can probably buy the tools to do a basketweave - one of the easier to do wedding designs - and that looks gorgeous with fresh flowers on top. i used to work in a bakery so i have all sorts of random information about cakes and tips for making them - fm if you need more info, have questions, or need tips for making filled cakes! good luck!
