I'm confused...Reserving Hotels for OOTG ???

How does this work?
I know where I want to reserve a block of rooms for OOTG but do I have to first know exactly how many OOTG will be staying in a hotel the night of the wedding before I contact the hotel? How do we find out?
Please help!

P.S. Do we have to pay anything to reserve rooms or sign a contract saying that a certain amount will stay there?

we blocked 15 rooms. they sent us a contract and we sent it back to them signed. whatever rooms aren't used, we don't get charged for them.

Come up with an estimate of approximately how many rooms you'll need, plus a few extra because some local people also like to make a whole night out of it and stay at the hotel to party afterwards. Give this number to the hotel, they'll send you a contract, read it carefully, sign it and send it back. Our hotel did not make us pay for unused rooms. They also made us nice cards to insert with out invites with all hotel info.
