Now how exactly do I know if a DJ's good or not when I go to see them? Do I ask to see tapes of a wedding they've done or something? I have no idea how to judge if one's good or not.

I think with the DJs it is important to see if you 'click' with their personality. They should be able to describe how they would handle your wedding reception and you should like what they describe and it should sound like what you want. Tapes and videos help but recommendations are good also. Nothing beats seeing them in action so if they are having a showcase soon you might want to attend. Good luck! This was the hardest part for me (so far!)

Well, I've come down to 3 that I'm interested in seeing judging from what I've read on this board, and that's High Voltage, High Energy and Get in Tune. High Voltage and High Energy's prices seem reasonable, but not sure about Get in Tune.

When I met with Vinny from High Voltage we spoke for over an hour about the type of wedding I see myself having. What kind of music, the type of crowd, etc. I even asked if he had a tape I could see of him in action and he had no problem sharing a wedding he had done. He made me feel very comfortable, listened to all my requests.
I hate to praise vendors that I have not actually worked with, but I can say that this is one vendor I do not have any reservations about booking.
Just make sure you feel comfortable with whom ever you choose. I feel it really does mean alot. My decision was based more on the personal level of attention I recieved, not the price, but High Voltages prices are incrediable.

I thought your date said 11/12 at first and was going to say, oh no they're already booked, but you're the day after me. Yeah, I guess I will judge by how comfortable I feel and making sure they have a feel of what type of music I want and everything.

We are using In The Mood in Smithtown (vendor on boards). With all the weddings and e-parties we went to over the years, FH didn't really care for any DJ. They did my sis wedding and we didn't even look further.

I understand what you mean as far as seeing the DJ's how do you decide? Basically, it's gotta be who you feel confident with, who you trust will present the music you want at your wedding, I think in general most of the DJ's that have been in the business know what needs to be done, what music etc. I felt that Vinny at High Voltage Sounds was very simple straightforward and very accomodating to my/fiancee's needs, he is totally there for you and I trust his sincerity when he says 'it's your day'. In addition to fact that he's not charging you 2-3grand for a 5hr event! Some places are really crazy with their prices!!

I feel when you find the right DJ you will just know...ask to see their video and look over their packages... also see what others have said about them...recommendations are very important IMO
