Re: im losing weight, BUT
I love the rowing machine at my gym. I do 50 lb 3 sets of ten, but I am thinking of switching it to 30 lbs, 5 sets of ten. It tones your back and triceps

No arm exercises will decrease the size of your arms. You have to lose bodyfat.

it shapes up the muscle and loses the fat..at least for me...kinda like a sit up for the arm lol

Re: im losing weight, BUT
for me, the only way to make something look smaller is to lose weight/fat
exercising can boost weight loss (cardio) but lifting really only helps to tone

Aside from diet, muscle helps burn fat. So watch what you eat, upgrade your cardio and lift light weights. Or wear a wrist weight while walking/jogging.

Re: im losing weight, BUT
thats part of my problem, my back injury prevents me from doing a lot of lifting, and I do lift now, but very little because i start to feel a pinch.

You cannot spot reduce fat.
If you lose overall bodyfat, your arms will lean out, and if you build the muscles underneath them, when you lose bodyfat your muscles will be toned.
Plan an upper body weight workout that you enjoy.
And dont' do kickbacks, they are ineffective.

Re: im losing weight, BUT
not arguing at all here but I tried the more cardio, less weight lifting and it did not work for me. I guess it's different for everyone. I actually lost weight when I cut cardio and did more lifting..and I really toned up.
Just saying I just thik the theory is wrong.
I see so may women run run run and sweat and once they cut back and do some lifting, it's amazing how their bodies look leaner.
I also am a firm believer in throwing out the scale and measuring yourself.

Re: im losing weight, BUT
yea i haven't been checking the scale at ALL.
All I did was change my breakfast to Fiber one cereals and cut out a lot of junk, and only drink water or black coffee (with a straw so I don't stain my teeth).
I walk almost every night with FH, use the bike for a few miles almost every day, and I use small 5lb weights.
I know I lost because I tried my dress on this weekend and it's REALLY big on me.

This is right too. Diet is by far most important, followed by lifting. Cardio is a distant third.
ETA: Let me clarify what I am talking about. Lifting will only do two things: increase strength and increase muscle size. When you have low bodyfat and you add more lean muscle, your bodyfat % will decrease, and as such, you will look more 'toned.' However, lifting will not decrease the size of your arms if you are carrying a lot of extra bodyfat (other than the calories you burn from lifting itself, which isn't super high, especially for girls who can't lift nearly as much weight as guys). In order to shrink your arms, you need to drop bodyfat, and diet is BY FAR the most effective way to do this.
So what's the benefit of lifting? By adding a bit of lean muscle you are reducing your bodyfat percentage, making you look leaner. Additionally, you are also giving your body more shape. Men and women who lift properly have great body shape because they are filling out their bodies and increasing muscle size.
