Dr. tells me after my surgery I should be able to move by either 9/13 or 9/20!!! So now I have to figure out how I'm getting all my stuff there - FH got us a 2 bed 2 bath (we want to make one room into a study room for him) but the apt wont be available until the 13th so we will probably will have to move him that weekend then move me out there the next - I'm trying to figure out how to get my two cats out there - any suggestions?
So I will be living in Michigan in a month

Re: I'm MOVING!
If you are flying or driving, get some tranquilizers from the vet. The cats will sleep most of the trip and the tranquilizers are safe Congrats on the move!

Re: I'm MOVING!
I was thinking of getting a Large dog cage to put them in - 14 hours of a small cat carrier might be to uncomfortable for them - they are large cats - plus they are brother and sister and are used to each other I think they might get scared being in separate cages- but not sure

You must be very excited!
As for the cats...I would probably keep them together in a big cage, like you said. Good luck!!!

that is so exciting Christine. You are going to have such a good time. You can definitely fly the cats with you in the cabin.

Re: I'm MOVING!
I am not flying b/c then how will I get my car there? I can't fly w/ them - there are 2 and you can only bring one at a tme, and need to reserve months in advance and you can't fly them in warmer tham 85 degrees - it is too hard and once I go they have no place to be mom won't let them into her house

Re: I'm MOVING!
you don't have to reserve months in advance, but you do have to pay $75 extra. I called the airline the week before. The temp only matters if you are going to check the animals as opposed to bringing them in the cabin. They won't check animals in the belly of the plane during certain months because of that. For small animals like cats, they can go under the seat in front of you.
But it doesn't matter if you are driving.

Re: I'm MOVING!
I don't know about the weather thing if you are going in Sept but I do know that you can ship your animals via plane through most carriers. Rob could pick them up at the airport and they would not have to be in a car in a cage for 14 hours. You probably don't want to send them that way but it is just another option.
Congrats on moving!!!! just to let you know what I did driving 3200 miles with my cat...I set up a station for her on the back window (where she usually likes to sit in the car) she had a small bed...water and food...
since I was piled up with my junk...her litter box was right next to it...just about the same level (but she rarely used it when the car was moving...she was good about holding it until the hotel)...and I let her roam around the car...she usually slept on the passengers lap...but also in the back window or ontop of a box...
GOOD LUCK!!
FYI: about pets on planes...I was told none during May-Sept...b/c of temp...but there is a cargo service that ships them, buts its expensive...

Re: I'm MOVING!
See I have two cats and they don't ever go out - so I'm not sure how they will be in the car - I'm afraid they will freak out - which was why I was thinking of a HUGE dog cage so they can move around but not do something like run under my leg so I can't brake or something
it may not seem like it...but you will have a lot more than you anticipate!! believe me I left a lot of things in NY...and a huge carrier might not fit
I would start taking the cats on short driving tips...but usually cats are good in the car...but they can go below your feet (I am used to it), but you can stop it easily too (as we did when my friend was driving)

Re: I'm MOVING!
we will have to rent a u-haul for my furniture and things - (I have nice furniture my grandmother gave me when I moved in here 6 years ago - it was hers) and FH just has some cheap things he bought to help him thru the year until he could use my things. So I have 2 dressers, a tread mill, a table, and some end tables, etc that I need to bring
I have to get my car there but a cage won't fit in my car so we were thinking of him taking my car out there early and maybe driving a rental out there to accomadate the cage.
He wasn't sure if he was moving or if I would be joining him so he never wanted to discuss any of this - UGH - now he is studying for finals (they start tomorrow) so he tells me Oh there is no rush we can discuss it when I come home sat. (nevermind I have surgery scheduled for next thurs - he seems to think we can call and get a u-haul and a rental car in one day. - why are guys so stupid sometimes
don't stress...there are tons of uhauls around...1 day is plenty of time to make arrangements...especially with the internet...
also try budget...for us it was cheaper...

Re: I'm MOVING!
We took our cats in cars and plane. the most they ever do is cry. Put a blanket for them to curl up and feel strurdy in and they should be ok. try not too feed them too much, and be prepared for some 'kitty mess'.
