Hi. I'm so new at this wedding planning stuff, and have only one friend who's been married! How do you go about researching photographers? Can you make an appointment to look at their work? Any reccomendations?

Welcome! The way that I found a photographer was doing a search on this board and on the knot. Get a list of possibles and then call them up to make an appointment. They should all have samples of their work for you to see when you get there. Some even have samples up on their websites.

You should start a thread giving a general amount you are willing to spend and asking for photographer recommendations. (Many photogs avg. between 2K and 6K for photo/video)
You could start with the vendors here on LIW.

Id suggest searching LIW and theknot.com for feedback on photographers and you can view proofs that brides have posted. This way you can find out what style you like and find out who is in your price range. If you post on the liw vendors board, the photographers will FM you quotes/packages.

Welcome! I LOVE your shoes in your pic I just looked at albums that were around in the halls I was checking out and I found when people hear you're engaged they start telling you 'Oh, my daughter used so and so...' LOL. That's how I got my photographer!

Welcome!! Word of mouth helps a lot!! Also, look on the board that girls post their reviews. It helps to hear from girls that have actually used a videographer and photographer. (Not just those that have theirs booked, but haven't used them yet)

congrats and welcome I am a newbie too. I used to work for a wedding photographer ( I will not recommend) but you usually make an appointment with them and you can see all their work, I absolutely recommend going with someone that someone you know recommends, try reading the reviews.
