Re: I'm obsessed with Knut

I'd heard the story about animal rights activists in Germany saying that because his mother rejected him (his brother died as a result) that he should be put to sleep (because in the wild he would have died).

I didn't know until this weekend that all the talk was about him. He's been hand fed and the zoo has decided to keep him alive. I don't know what the 'right' thing to do was (because he's raised by humans, because polar bears are solitary animals, etc.) - all I know is that I want to fly to Germany and steal him.

Yeah, it's a tricky situation... While I understand what the animal rights activists are saying, I don't agree with them. I understand what they're saying but the fact that he was able to be hand-fed and raised, why not save him?

From what I understand Polar Bears are on the endangered list, so why wouldn't a zoo keeper do everything in their power to keep one alive? I understand that the mother rejected him for some reason and that in the wild he would have died like his brother but they weren't in the wild. They're in captivity so why not save the little guy? I just don't understand it.

I totally agree with you. That's why I did the '...' with when I said 'right'.

IMO, captive bears lead VERY different lives than wild bears. For example, don't they have vets check on them regularly? So yeah, in the wild this little baby would have died. But he doesn't live in the wild, he lives in a zoo. And as long as they don't plan on releasing him into the wild, I have no problem with the zookeepers helping him out. Only if they plan on releasing him would it be a problem.

That's exactly what I'm saying...ITA!
