Many of you know I lost my job about 2 months ago. (Definitely a blessing in disguise because our house is almost finished and I got so much wedding stuff done, I won't be rushed over the next 2 weeks.) Anyway, I received an offer this week and it was less than what I was making before. Significantly less and I was really disappointed. I explained to them that at my last job I was making X and hope their offer is negotiable. They came back this morning and offered an extra $5k, still $7500 less than what I was making. If they go up another $5k, I would accept it. How do I go about negotiating that aspect? They want me to join the company and I want to. What should I say back? Should I say if you can make the offer another $5k, I will sign off on the agreement? HELP!!!
UPDATE!!!!!!!!!! They accepted what I proposed! I'm so happy! YAY! I have a job again!
Thank you everyone for your advice!

Would you want to negotiate time off or working from home?? They might be more willing to work with you on that stuff then on adding more money. I would say def. try to get more $$, it never hurts to ask if they can do more. If they say they can't then negotiate other benefits.

Well when FH and I get married, I won't need medical so that would actually be a good thing for them because they pay into it (not all of it, but a significant amount). I was thinking of mentioning that as well.
The vaction time is actually 1 day more than I was getting before, which I don't think I need to negotiate more for. I am really just looking for more money. I mean I felt so insulted yesterday when they sent the offer and it was $15,000 less than what I was making before. That's a huge difference, especially when we have a mortgage to pay!

If I remember correctly, you work in Finance right?
I don't know - its a hard time with not as many jobs available. . .
The bottom line is - are you just trying to get more money or will you really not take it if they don't give you more?
If you won't take it unless they meet you at $5k higher, then tell them what you wanted to - that the lowest you can go is X to get by. . .
If you plan on taking it regardless, that gets a bit more tricky. . you have to be careful about the way you approach it because if you come off too stern they might just say forget it. . .
Good luck! Let us know how it turns out!

Just speculating here..bu maybe that's were they're coming from...before you were paying into your healthcare so your actual salary may have been closer to what they offered. Do they know that you're going on FH's insurance? Also, they're probably trying to leverage this job market, where they might feel that the job market is a little tougher now so epople will take whatever...again I'm just speculating.
I say it's alwys worth it to ask for what you want, because if you don't ask you don't get anything. I would def. say that while you're grategul that they went up another $5K that you would like to know if they can come in with more $$, that you really would love to work for them but the only thing holding you back is the salary they offered.
Maybe they can give you sign-on bonus and an agreement that they would increase your salary the following to cover the sign-on bonus?? again just thinking out loud here.
Good luck!

Ohhh boy! if its finance i would say give a gental additional negotiation for some benefits i.e working at home additional vacation or something. My FH is (Was) an analyst on wall street. he's been looking for 6 months now and each day it gets more difficult as more people hit the job market. i say TAKE IT!!!! maybe with a contingency to review your salary in 6months or a year? PS - let me know if they're hiring more i'll send you FH's resume

I'm in marketing. I know they want me to join the company since I have the experience they want.
I definitely don't want to sound stern, but it was a significant difference. It was pretty insulting.

No, they don't know I'm going on FH's insurance. At my previous job, the company was paying into my health insurance and I was paying a little bit. It would be the same thing here.
I agree about the market. I don't know about a sign-on bonus. I dont' think it's something they would offer. I am willing to get paid less, but I also have a mortgage to pay, you know? If they offer another $5k, I would accept it.

I can understand how it was insulting - and I am 100% sure I would feel the same way - but from an outsider's perspective, bluekat might be right - they probably ARE just leveraging the market - it was a very different market when you probably got hired at your other job for $X / year.
If you are very confident that they want you as bad as you want to go there, then I would approach it along the lines of 'I really want to come work for your Company, I think it would be a great opportunity, my only reservation right now is the salary. With my mortgage and expenses, I really need $XX to get by. . .' That way the worst they can say is that they can't swing it. . .
Good luck, I really do hope it works out!

Is it right for me to tell them to add the $5k?

Well - I'm getting the impression that you won't take it if they don't - so what do you have to lose? $5k isn't much for a company in the grand scheme of things - so if you are a good match for the job, I can't see that being a deal breaker for them - I would go for it!

ask, see what they can do.....
if they dont budge maybe you should just accept the offer - any job is better than job - especially with the way things are going right now....you can always keep looking - they say its always the easiest to find a job when you already have one

How's this?
Thank you very much for getting back to me. I really appreciate the additional increase in the salary. I am very excited about the position and know it would be a great opportunity, but my only reservation right now is the salary. Knowing that many of the events that will be in my portfolio have very high standards to continue to grow them, a lot will be expected of me. I understand the potential to make a considerable amount of money on profit share, and have carefully thought it over and am willing to take a decrease in base salary. I will not need any health benefits, and am asking for an additional $5,000 to the base, putting it at X.
Thank you so much for the opportunity. I hope to get the employee agreement back to you by COB today.
All the best, Michelle

try again with the salary but if they dont offer more, JMHO...take the job regardless, esp in this market.
