Heres a little background for you. I have been with my company for 6 years. I started out as receptionist and worked my way up to Administrative Assistant. There are two people in my department that do work. Oh I also got a promotion last year to work with the Claims Department too. Well last year, one of the people I work with got transferred (not promoted) to another department. Thats fine, no biggie but I wondered why they choose her and not me since I had three years senority over her. Well this afternoon I get an email from one of my bosses saying that this girl is not getting promoted to being an Account Manager!!!!
I dont know what the hell is going on with my company but Im going to talk to my boss to see why I was slighted again? Do you think I should?
I think the whole reason why Im not getting transferred is because Im heavily involved in claims and they dont want to go through the motions of training someone new.

I do agree you should go in and speak to your boss but not today when you are upset. I would write down all of the things you've done etc and then question him as to why you've been passed over.
Try to think of any question he might pose to you and make sure you have answers - as an example - do you only work 9-5 while this woman stays until 7pm - maybe that's a reason to him but you might reply I can leave at 5pm because I have finished my work for the day.

I think you should go in and talk to your boss. I would tell him/her that you are very much interested in taking on more responsibility and moving into a new position if/when one is available.

That's rotten boosh - I would def. try and bring it up with your boss. The fact that she's the boss's neice shouldn't override all of your hard work and experience with the company, and I think you have every right to bring this to your's boss's attention! I agree that it's so frustrating... I just do NOT understand how people can make decisions like this!!! Well, WE think you're worth it!! You know you always have support here! Believe me, I know. I work for a family owned business - 9 partners with their kids working here now.

OH... now doesn't THAT just BLOW Nepotism at its finest!
I'm all for you going in and speaking up about the way you've been slighted, but if I'm being honest with myself I would say that I STINK at going into my boss and speaking up for myself (I'm a serious wimp). Knowing me Iwould probably just steam about it, vent about it to you all, but quietly keep it to myself with the boss
This is not to say you SHOULDN'T speak up, by all means you SHOULD. Its just really hard to do, esp. in light of the fact that this girl who was promoted is a relative.. that makes it SO much sticker.
I know I didn't give you ANY advice here, but you do have my support and I truly am sorry that this happened..

While I agree that speaking to them won't make a difference with this particular job, it may in the future. I would let them know that you are upset by this and feel you are not given the same opportunities. I would NOT, however, mention any 'theories' about why this other woman was promoted. In fact, I wouldn't mention too much about her period as you want to be taken very seriously in this conversation and dredging up this woman's info is going to see very unprofessional.

some place you can work there for over 5 years and if the other person has more college or came from a company that the name is so highly held they get movement quicker. my last job they didnt even know i had a bacholars and one day they turn around and said did you even go to college. i was completely insulted becuase this is the person who interviewed me. thats when you know that they havent taken the time to really get to know there employees. thats why im not there.

My job, UPDATE on bottom
So I went in and had a talk with my boss and she said that I wasnt being moved is because the new job entails alot of talking with brokers, etc.. and she feels that my communication skills are not up to par with this new job. She said you basically have to know the 'language' of insurance and that I dont. So I told her that I recently started making and taking calls in claims so Im starting to develop myself in the communication department. Of course, she blew some smoke up my a s s. She was telling me that Im so loyal to the company, Im such a good worker, she hears nothing but good things about me, etc..
Basically the bottom line is I think they are BS'ing me because this girl doesnt know the 'language' any more than I do, and she would have to be trained. So why couldnt they train me? Its nepotism all the way.

it's clearly favoritism, this girl is the boss' niece, she lives with her boyfriend at his mother's house -- they have a 3 year old child together. The living conditions are miserable and he is having a hard time getting a job. he has applied to work in sanitation and they are waiting to find out if he gets in. If he does, it's good for them, they can plan their wedding (they're engaged) and look for another place to live. She has told her aunt on numerous occasions that she can't live with his mother anymore. If he doesn't get the sanitation job, he'll have no other prospects and it will be a long time before he can take the test again. Chances are the relationship would dissolve because they fight alot over his mother.
Given that, her aunt probably wanted to ensure they have some decent money coming in in case his job falls through, so they can move out. Plus, her aunt wouldn't want the child to undergo any hardship of the parents separating.
