whats wrong with special ed? Whom ever decided to put you into special ed (i dont know-the principal??) knows that you are the one to be able to handle it. Not many people are fit for the job. I think its an honor. I dont know....thats my opinion..if i was to go back into school for teaching it would be special ed :)

In my school they dont support special ed. The classes are out of control and the teachers are on their own. Ive heard of so many horror stories about teachers in Special ed. I just want to stay with general ed because that is where my passion is at.

Thanks for making me smile Yea, I got my masters in special ed (to gain experience and help my general ed kids who really need extra help- I wanted to be able to reach them too) and now my decision has pretty much backfired on me. I love teaching general ed, but I just see what the special ed teachers go through in my school. Some cry and complain how they cant do this anymore... and how they dont want to teach anymore because of what they go through. I love teaching and I dont want to run away....

Re: Im sad.... Can someone Cheer Me Up?

Sorry this is going to be a little long.
Tust me it'll be okay. I went to school for general education as well and although I don't teach in the school system (I decided to open a day care instead) I have always said to myself when and if I ever do decide to go and teach I want to teach Special Ed. It's funny because while I was going to school my dad used to alwayd try to convince me to do special education so I can go and teach at the school he was working in and I always said no. I don't have the patience for special needs children. He worked in a charter school with only special education kids. They were vthe worse of the worse. But, once I went there for a semester in observation I fell in love with all the kids. I then realized that I had more love for the special ed children then general ed. In my daycare program too, I have 2 autistic children that come afterschool and I heart them so much. It might be tough at first but sooner then later you will be happy. Special Ed students don't take their teachers for granter at all. They look up to you and have nothing but love for you. Good Luck!!!

I have done both, and kinda ended up in special ed just b/c that where there was an opening. I never want to go back to regular ed again!!!! Even if you end up there and don't like it it isnt for the rest of your life! Just be happy you have a job when a lot of teachers are being cut.

I worked at a special needs home with 8 children with differnt mental disorders thjrough college. I absolutely looooooved them!!! for 4 years i worked with them, and would give so much to go back to them. i get happy birthday cards signed by the kids each year still, and get letters from them as they learn to write.

I know its hard, but i think u should take the job and learn from it. The children are wonderful and just as they will learn from you, you will learn from them

I work at a program for adults with developmental disabilities and even though the pay s*cks, the guys there totally make up for it. They have so much love in them and can be so so entertaining. Where else can you work and have someone tell you, 'You smell so lovely, you smell just like air freshener!' Or have someone run into the office, take over the PA system and announce 'F*ck you everyyyyybody!' to the whole school?!

I teach Special Education...and it takes special person to do it..I am sure you will be just fine. If you need any help, I will help you but believe me when you step into a special ed classroom just be patient and understanding and you will do fine..I am sure the kids will adore you!

When I interviewed in my district, they gave me the option of gen or spec ed. I chose spec ed and I think it was the best decision ever. It is more paperwork, but I love my kids and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

Re: Im sad.... Can someone Cheer Me Up?

My mother has worked with children all her life. From home childcare to high school teacher.
The last 6 years she has worked in school for special ed students and she loves it. She says that it is the most rewarding work that she has ever done. She is always so proud of the students. She talks about them as if they are her own children. They are any where from 3yrs to 22.
She says that it is easier because she understands that they just don't have a choice. She also says that they really love you.
Don't worry I think that you will be fine. You have to be an outstanding person to be chosen for a position like this. I'm sure you will be great at it.
Good Luck
