important HR-Wedding related question!! help please!!

OK. So now that I am married, what do I need to do???

Do i need to update my W-4 tax forms at work? DH/John was asking me about this yesterday. And, honestly, i never thought about it.

If i do update them now, do you think more or less will be taken from my paycheck since now we are 'combining' income?

any idea?

Anything else need to be updated? HELLLPPPP

You cannot change your W-4 until you have your new SS card, since they need a copy of that. You can withold more since you are married, but that is up to you. I didn't change my witholding, I would rather have more taken out and get more back.

You should change it to reflect your new name. And if you increase your witholding, you get more money since less tax is taken out.

haha i know, i'm only slightly knowledgable since i'm an accountant. andrew did change his witholding at his job. he name claims 2 witholding on his w-4, but i left mine the same. my payroll department advised me to just change the witholding on one of our w-4s. but if you plan on taking his last name, definitely change it on your w-4 to avoid confusion when you file next year.

i actually had big problems with my taxes this year, since i changed my name before we filed, but my w-2 had my old last name, it took me FOREVER to get my refund and i had to call a bunch of times to verify my information.

Other things that your DH may have to look into changing is if he has a 401K plan & wants to add you as a benificiary. Also if either of you have any money saved in CDs or mutual funds you may want to update who it is in trust for. Its also a good time to discuss living will & all that other stuff.

are you guys changing your insurance to one or the other's plan? you only have 31 days from your wedding day to do that or you will have to wait until open enrollment comes around at one of your workplaces!
