Important- need help about cancellation. Boo economy!

I'm having a hard time coming up with money for the wedding. My parents offered to pay for most of it but my dad recently got laid off and is having a hard time finding a jo(hes in printing). I really cant ask them to pay for anything. Being that the economy is only getting worse- I'm nervous that me and FH can't even afford it(hes in construction and he is running out of work-hes not even working full weeks now). Does anyone know if there are any laws in suffolk county about getting deposits back- my parents already put 6k down towads the thatched cottage but the contract we signed states that all refunds are lost if you cancel 8 months before the wedding(we missed it by 1 month. Me and fh were thinking to book a less expensive place or change the date possibly(although i dont want to change the date!). Any suggestions? I need all the help i can get. This economy blows.

Also i was going to call the thatched cottage after work today to see if they can lower the price or make any deals but i doubt they will. We'll see....

Maybe see if you could push it back to 2010 some places allow you to do it

i would definitely try this, or maybe see if they will push it to the winter. i know the thatched cottage has special winter pricing since its on the water its a really tough time for them to book. but its still so pretty with the pond frozen and all the lights out.

There is a law in suffolk county stating that you get all of your deposit back but $100. This law overides anything in your contract. If you want to cancel, call them and tell them you know about this law. If they dont act by refunding your money, report them to BBB.

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. I commend you for being so level headed and doing what is best for you, FH and your family.

What is going on in the economy is unprecedented. I'm at work and November's job losses were just announced- 6.7% unemployment rate, my Bank's economists are predicting 10% in 2009.

With that said, I would honestly push the wedding back and talk to your venue about reducing the pp charge if you were to do a Winter month. It would only be a few months difference. That's my advice.

move the date a day forward!!! July 2nd!! you will still be on the right timeline!

there weren't any fridays left at our RH, so we moved it to a thursday and got it for less than half the price of the weekend!!

Soontobemrsk brought up a good point with that Suffolk law, but the RH will likely give you a hard time.

Don't be so sure your hall won't negotiate, what's going on in the economy hurts them too, and they will most likely work with your budget. It never hurts to ask... the worst they can say is: No.

January and March are the cheapest wedding months, so you can always consider that as well.

Just talk to your RH and see what they are willing to do to accommodate you. If you have to push the wedding back a bit then so be it...you will still be getting married!!!! If you do decide to cancel just work with your hall and remind them of the suffolk county law....

try to push the wedding back if possible so that you have more time to save up for it... also its a good thing your hall is in suffolk county w/ regards to the law

I agree, see if you can change the date. It would be better to change the date rather than change locations and looose all that money you put down. I am getting married in the winter and since it's off season it's much more affordable. Good luck, and remember whatever happens you will stll have your special day, now you just have more time to make it perfect!

I was like you. I told my hall that for financial reason I could not go through with the wedding in 2009. They agreed to let me postpone. Had I cancelled I would have lost all the deposits so far, but since I postponed they let me keep it all.

My hall was in Nassau though. Suffolk has that law.

if you just want to change the date they should work with you. Keep your mind open to the winter, you will save a TON of $$.

Thanks everyone! I am def. going to talk to the rh first to see if they can lower the price but if not i might have to cancel. They are already booked on that thursday and i really wanted a summer date just bc im a teacher and i can take off and enjoy the honeymoon w/out worrying about work. Plus, that date is really close to our actual anniversary;) Does anyone know where i can find this law. Also, what is BBB?

i dont know anything about laws in NY but i was thinking changing the time of year or day of week would definantly make it less expensive. Maybe you could always negotiate your minimum and keep the guest list lower to help save. Even pushing it back a year to allow more money to save. No sense going bankrupt for one day.
