In Law Rant
I went to my in laws for dinner on Sunday. FH's dad says 'So how's the wedding planning going?' I told him that it was a lot of work.. but it is a little exciting. He says 'Some would say ANNOYING.' So I say 'Why?' He goes on about how now he has to dress up and haul his *** out east and sit there for hours, blah blah blah. And then goes on a tangent about how it's silly since we already live together and have children and it is redundant... I just ignored him.
Then his mother tells me not to bother sending FH's brother an invite because he won't come up from down south for the wedding. I was like 'He can't afford it?' She's like 'I guess.. I told him I would pay for the plane for him and that he can stay here with (his wife and stepchild) but he said no, that he's not coming.' I was like... okay. My brother is flying up with his wife and 3 kids and staying in a hotel to be here. His brother can't make it even if he doesn't have to buy the ticket? Fine.
Later FH's sister asks about the mother/son dance and I told her I haven't completely worked out the song. FMIL says.. 'I don't know if I can even be there..' ***?? She continues that it is going to be very emotional remembering my parents and sister and that she is sure that she will be sad. She doesn't know if she will be able to HANDLE it! I was like 'I hope you are joking' She says... 'I am sure we will be there... ' but with no certainty in her voice at all. Then she says how she will probably cry if/when she dances with FH. My FSIL turns around and goes 'Why? It isn't like a REAL wedding. They have been together forever and he hasn't lived home in 5 and a half years..' That hurt.
I know that we are not a 'traditional couple'. Neither of us are 25 and living at home. We have 2 children. We have lived together for almost 6 years. But we are choosing to have a wedding as a way of celebrating our life together. A way of showing our committment to each other in a formalized way. We want to have our friends and family around us. I know my family and our friends are excited. I don't even need his family to be excited.. just not to be so overt about showing their lack of enthusiasm.
Cause it hurts my feelings.
