In-Laws

Does anyone have in-laws that hate you? How do you handle? I've never had anyone hate me...especially w/o good reason. I cant seem to get past it...or stop driving my FH crazy about it. His dad and step-mom are awful towards me. I'd love feedback on how people deal with this situation!!

this is terrible i would have if my FIL hated me or even treated me poorly. thats sad. My FFIL's girlfriend always seems to embarass me, but i think FH has asked her if she liked me, and she said yes that i am very respectful. BUt i could never imagine them not liking me and treating me terrible. sorry you have to go through that. i hope things get better for you.

Mine doesnt like me but pretends to my face that she does. She doesn't like me cause I'm not Hispanic/Puerto Rican. She said she wishes FH would have picked a nice Hispanic/Puerto Rican girl who would give him babies and be there for her... for HER????
FH is only 1/4th puerto rican so I don't understand her freaking logic on where these hispanic babies are coming from.

I just ignore it. She can hate on me all she wants for insane reasoning. It's not going to affect me or FH.

I think you need to get FH involved. If you two are going to be spending the rest of your life together, then he needs to tell his dad and step mom to respect you. If he is not willing to step up and come to your defense, then there is a serious problem.

As for you, you can refuse to be with them. If FH is going to see them, you can stay behind. No reason to put yourself in a situation where you know you will be open to ridicule.

Perhaps try and find out why they are so hostile. Did you have a troubled past or are there rumors about you flying around? If so, try and put their mind at ease.

But ultimately, FH needs to stand up to them for you.

it's probably not even anything 'personal'. Like what Opera_Ghost said , they don't like her because she's not Hispanic/Puerto Rican. That's ridiculous. There must be some reason that your In-Laws are acting this way. Maybe they can't handle their boy falling in love and 'leaving them'. Ya think?? I just know that in most cases, it barely has anything to do with the actual PERSON, but more about circumstances. Which is stupid.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I hope things work out.

Re: In-Laws

I truly dont know what started it all. They were great in the beginning. And then the Dad started to blame me for stuff that had nothing to do with me. FH has two kids that live with us...and when they didnt call him for Easter 2 yrs ago...he sent me a nasty email...that was the start of it. I ignored the email...as I have no control over whether the kids call him...that is his son's job. Then several months later came another email acusing me of keeping his son and grandkids away from him on holidays. The funny thing is...they NEVER invite us over. FH says they didnt invite him over before I came along...the step-mom doesnt like the kids running around. So I finally replied to the email and asked him to stop contacting me. That's when all hell broke loose. I continue to avoid him when possible...with exception to some family functions...but feel like it's an issue. I dont want FH to be stuck in the middle...but I also think something needs to be said to them. Our engagement party is at the end of the month...my parents invited them as a courtesy...yet they havent even replied yet...and wont be surprised if they dont.

wow, that just sounds really screwed up in my opinion. Sounds like some kind of issues on the father's end. Nothing to even do with you. I don't know what to say. That's just crazy

I feel for you. My FMIL is not so nice to me either. It used to bother me more, but I know that FH has my back, and that makes all the difference.

Maybe that's my problem...I dont feel as if FH stands up for me. Rather he ignored his Dad for months...until his Dad called...now they are on friendly terms again...but he never made a hard stance and said...'my girlfriend cant be treated this way.' I'm trying to ignore the whole sitaution, but if they dont RSVP to the engagement party...I might fly off the deep end! : ) LOL Not that I want them there...but out of respect for my parents that are doing this for me and his son...they should respond yes or no.
