I got from a site:

'The Mardi Gras season begins on January 6 and continues until Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday.'

'Mardi Gras means 'Fat Tuesday' and of course is celebrated on that day of the week. The date can fall between February 3 and March 9 depending on the Lunar calendar, used by the Catholic Church to determine the date of Easter. Mardi Gras is always 47 days before Easter Sunday. '

Mud bugs....mmmmmmmmmmm.......I had crawfish bisque the other night!

Here's a little Mardi Gras history - Mardi Gras actually originiated in Mobile, AL. How do I know this? Because that's where DH's family lives. We went there one year for Mardi Gras. They have parades during the day, and formal Balls at night (we went to one).
It's more of a family-friendly Mardi Gras in Mobile. The parades are fun too; everyone goes nuts trying to catch the stuff that's thrown off the floats. Oh, but it kinda hurts when you get pegged in the head with a wadful of beads . Moon Pies don't exactly tickle either!!!

Happy Mardi Gras!

awww, Mardi Gras will forever remind me of my best friend's bachelorette party We had a Mardi Gras theme and decked out in beads, and took her to Hoboken and had the most wonderful night ever. Never really celebrated it before, but now I love it bc of all the nice memories it brings back

Enjoy your Mardi Gras festivities everyone!

OK, I have to disagree. Being a New Orleans girl myself, I have to say that Mardi Gras did not first originate in Mobile. I can't say that it first originated in New Orleans either as it a European import celebrated even before Christopher Columbus set sail. It is a very hotly debated issue down South--New Orleans vs. Mobile. I have to say nothing can compare to good old New Orleans Mardi Gras and is by far the most popular. And the celebration starts way before Mardi Gras week!

Mardi Gras came from Carnivale.. which is from Italy. There is a VERY twisted history to it too. It is celebrated in Venice the same night as Mardi Gras.
Let me see if I can find some history...

I should've said that it's U.S. origin is Mobile (or so the people in Mobile claim). Yes, there's a big debate in the South over that. I would've never known this if I hadn't been schooled on the history of Mardi Gras during my first visit to Mobile

Hahaha--We New Orleanians are very defensive about the U.S. origination.

Doesn't 'The Cask of Amantillado' take place during Mardi Gras? Isn't that how Montressor covers up his whole brickin'-up-my-pal? Under the cover of Carnivale?

Yes! They used to wear masks and stuff so they could do as many 'bad things' as they wanted before Lent started. They used to screw around, gamble etc. all while wearing masks and costumes so no one knew who was doing what. Then on Ash Wednesday they would start their pennance for what they did.
