Increase in age for buying Cigarettes

I was in the supermarket today and noticed a sign posted stating that as of May 1 the legal age in Suffolk County to buy cigarettes will be increased to 19. I think its really not going to make a difference. WHat do you guys think?

I don't see how one year makes a difference.

I thought that already happened. I don't really think its going to make that much of a differnce. But I have noticed lots of kids trying to quit.

I started smoking at 14, the age limit never mad a difference - although they didn't have those 'We proof' signs up back then, they were just coming out when I came of age ... so I'm not sure how hard it is to buy cigarettes now a days. I don;t mean at 7-11 but at smaller shops.

I really don't think it makes a different, teenagers wil still find a way to buy the cigarettes.

i agree kids will eventually get their hands on cigs easily and quickly but we have to start somewhere. it may be a lil naiive but it needs to be enforced somehow to make an impact on ppl's minds.

i think that the thought process behind raising the cigarette age to 19 was that now any kids that are still in HS are too young to buy cigarettes. So now, seniors cant buy cigaretts for sophomores and freshman and juniors... does that make sense?? I think it will make somewhat of a difference because when i was in 10th & 11th grade i wasnt really hanging out with college kids, but i was hanging out with seniors...

Enforcement is KEY. I hardly ever got proofed. I never really needed someone to buy my cigarette's. Once in a while it was a pain but for the most part it was never a problem. And I always looked soo young as a teenager. When I was 15 I dated this guy and his sister asked him why he was dating a 10 year old so I should have been proofed a lot more!

Actually, there was a local store in my neighborhood that stopped selling cigs because of the 'we proof' thing. The owner was telling me that they have HS kids working there who did not consistently ask for ID. The state sends in young looking people to buy cigarettes and if the clerk doesn't ask for ID, the store gets fined. The fines increase with each offense. So this guy decided it wasn't worth the penalties they kept incurring to justify selling the cigs anymore.

I dont even get proofed now for buying alcohol!!! I work at HS and still get yelled at for being in the faculty bathroom because they all think I am a student!!! How can they not proof me??

lol... FH and were buying beer in a gas station one time and the guy asked which one of us had id. We said we both did, and when we went to pull it out he was like no thats ok. What sense does that make?

Re: Increase in age for buying Cigarettes

that's the problem we have.. the vendors who sells the tobacco and alcohol need to learn the repurcussions of allowing purchases by potential under aged buyers. but they continue to test the law simply because tehy're stupid. there's so many different areas that needs to be well-educated about this huge problem. maybe more secret shoppers on the job? there needs to be some parental control and also schools should have a program so that kids can be made aware of the substance(s).

or i'm just being too naiiive...

They're not stupid, they just make more money than the fines right now ... we need bigger fines and more enforcement.

I also agree with you on education - parents, schools, television - a whole lot of education is needed.
