What can you do to your home to really increase the value? Now, it's much different here in NC than LI. Houses up there just increase because of it being on the island. Here, it take A LOT more! Does anyone have any ideas? So far we've only put up a 6 ft stockade fence up. That probably doesn't increase the value much at all, but it's something. Any ideas? Thanks!

ceramic or marble flooring and granite countertops increase the value. also upgrading electrical and plumbing service if its an older home always increases the value as well.

Re: Increasing the value of your home...
we redid the siding, put in new windows, added windown/made them bigger, redid kitchen, added a 3rd full bath, refinished the hardwood, added a laundry/mud room, upgraded the fuse box, converted to gas and got a new boiler/water heater, hmmm.... is that all? Oh yeah- put in a new oak banister. We just had our house re-appraised and after all I mentioned above and 2 years later since we bought the house it has increased it's value by $250 K!
Mind you we did most of the work ourselves so we saved tons! We only put in 30K and got $250 K increase.
Depends on how handy and how much time you have inorder to DIY.
Good luck!
ETA: Just updating your house adds value. You can do just a few of the things we did and add lots of value to your house. Also, when your area goes up, so does your house.

Adding a pool increases the value.
Incorrect. Adding a pool does not increase value... and sometimes DECREASES the value. Do an internet search about this and you will see.
The best bang for your buk comes with kitchen and bathroom renovation.

Re: Increasing the value of your home...
One of my favorite shows on HGTV is Designed to Sell .. they go through the house .. and figure out what should be done to increase the value of the home .. and they only have a $2,000 budget to work with.
Some of the transformations have been amazing .. of course .. the show can probably get away with getting alot more power out of their dollar than the normal, average person .. but it definitely is a great show for ideas, inspiration and encouragement!
And yes, they have said on this show .. kitchens and bathrooms are key.
