Just wondering if anyone here had their labor induced...wondering how an induced labor differs from a labor brought on naturally...
Thanks in advance ~CarrieAnn

Re: induction
They can use pitocin or a vaginal gel (suppository) that helps the cervix soften adn dialate. I definitely preferred it to take the natural process, the pitocin was VERY uncomfortable for me.

Re: induction
They are talking induction b/c of possible pre-eclampsia...doesnt sound like natural is an option at this point, so just trying to gather information... I think the Dr. mentioned the gel the night before then the drugs the next morning...

Re: induction
I hear that the gel is much better than pitocin, it is a slower process, it is closer to the replication of a natural softening and dilation of the cervix.

Re: induction
I'm being induced next week. I go into the hospital Monday night and they apply the gel if my cervix isn't ready. The next day they start the Pitocin.
I've read that since the Pitocin brings on the contractions so fast, you pretty much skip over the inactive part of labor and go right into active labor. That's why it seems so much more intense to people, you haven't been building up to it, if that makes sense.
I have my last dr's appt on Thursday, so once he lets me know more, I'll be sure to share it here.

Yup, that was my experience. I went from nothing to WOW!!!! with Pitocin. The contractions were hitting so hard I didn't have time to catch my breath or come to terms with what was happening (I was sort of freaking out). I thought it would be gradual but it wasn't.

Re: induction
The cervidil should be used the night before if you are being admitted with very little dilation and effacing. I was about 1 cm and 70% and was induced with the cervidil at 8PM and was to start the pitocin 12 hours later if I had made progress. The cervidil did make me begin contractions at about midnight. The following morning I was put on pitocin and a very slow, gradual start. I didn't think it was that bad, to be honest. I was completely fine with them increasing the pitocin and my contractions, until, my water broke at about 3:30PM. I was about 2 cm then and completely effaced. My water breaking, to me, was much, much worse than the pitocin. I really moved along then, getting to 10 cm with in 2.5 hours.
I also was induced because of possible toxemia. My blood tests came back OK, but I was showing other signs of it. I decided for my health and my baby's, I would go ahead with the induction, even though I also had my reservations about it. I was 41 weeks at that point.

Re: induction
We were back in the hospital again last night for 3 hrs of tests...the blood work came back fine, and the protein levels have dropped. My blood pressure is fine when I am on my side, not so fine when sitting up...we'll see what they say when I go in again tomorrow AM. Thanks for all the insight ladies!

Re: induction
When my water broke they gave me pitosin because my contractions were not intense enough....I did not think it was bad at all...of course I already had the epidural by the time they gave it to me, so that might be why.
