I also heard great things about Arthur Murray Studios ( I know there are a few), but not sure about how much they charge

This might sound weird, but a friend of mine took dance lessons through a continuing ed course. If you look on some school district websites they will list the conutinuing ed courses they offer for adults and she took ballroom dance. She learned the basics and said it was good. I know Rocky Point and Three Village offerd it in spring.

Definitely check out 'Continuing Education' courses - also check out Arthur Murray - I've heard nothing but great things about them!!!
