Do you think it will be a problem for the guests if we send out invites stating it will be a mass, but it really is only a ceremony. We already ordered the invites stating it will be a mass and we cant afford to change them.

it will be a delightful surprise....just spread by word of mouth that it was changed last minute and the invites had already shipped from the printers so you couldnt' change them...

well... I would say no, but some people see 'mass' and say to themselves... okay... that will count as mass for that day, and we'll receive communion then. Some might secretly be disappointed if they get there to find NO COMMUNION FOR YOU! (In the 'soup natzi' voice).
Maybe you can just inform those guests who you know go to regular Sunday mass that it will just be a ceremony?

I agree with the first part, but I think the opposite is also true - some people see mass and groan and don't go to the ceremony because of how long a full mass is.
Either way, spreading info about the change would IMHO be welome regardless of which side of the fence the guests fall on!

yes....when we were invited to a wedding that had a mass, we skipped the ceremony. we were workplace guests and many of the other workplace guests did the same.

Re: Inivitations Problem
I figured no one would be upset at a shorter ceremony including myself and my FH. We originally chose the mass, so the guests that came to the ceremony wouldnt be waiting around too long for the reception, especially since most are from out of town. But then we changed our reception location and the guests can show up earlier and now we can have more time for pictures.
