Inlaw and names

Inlaw and names

What will everyone be calling their new inlaws once you are married? I currently call them Mr and Mrs C*******...but I don't think that's going to work once I'm Mrs. C*******!!! I don't know if I'm comfortable calling them Mom and Dad either since I kind of feel that I have only one Mom and Dad. My fiance is having the same issue so I told him I'd ask the board! What do you think?

Re: Inlaw and names

I understand what you mean, my FMIL came up to me a couple of months ago and told me for now on to call them mom & dad. I still have not done it, I cant get myself to say it. I thought it was very sweet of her to make that gesture it is just VERY difficult to get those words out

Re: Inlaw and names

I currently call my FILs by their first names...I assume I will continue to call them by their first names. As for sending cards, they are addressed as 'Mom & Dad' b/c the card is from FH as well...

Re: Inlaw and names

Did you ask them what they want to be called? My parents told FH he can call them by their first name. They'd be very happy with Mom and Dad too. My FIL's refer to themselves as Mr. and Mrs. to me, so that's what I will call them.

Hi Erin... i just realized that its you

Its funny, i don't call them anything. I call his dad by his first name since i knew him before i knew FI. But i don't call his mom anything... i jokingly use MOM sometimes. If i do address her its by her first name.

I've posted this a few times, but they asked me to call them mom & dad and I said no. I just didn't feel right, although it was very nice of them. I call them by their first names instead. Why should I spend the rest of my life not calling them anything? That was my thinking.

FH's family made it easy for me. He is from Poland, thus he calls him parents Mama and Tata. Since it means Mom and Dad but it isn't actually Mom and Dad, FH and I will call his parents Mama and Tata and mine Mom and Dad . No awkwardness or weird feelings from our parents and no disrespect to each other's parents.

Re: Inlaw and names

I think it depends on the day with what i call them. I think I call them Mr. and Mrs. B******, but she refers to herself as Mom B******. I personally find this kind of annoying even though I know she is just trying to be nice. My FH doesn't call my parents anything, but he refers to them as Mom and Dad

When I first met my inlaws...I called them Mr. & Mrs....but they yelled at me and told me to call them by their first names. My parents on the other hand still insist that FI call them Mr. & Mrs.

Re: Inlaw and names

My mother and father have always had my friends and etc call them mom and dad, so that's what JT calls them, as for his parents, I prefer CRAZY LADY and CRAZY LADY'S HUSBAND! Haha, JUST KIDDING! (or am I?) But they refer to themselves to me by their first names.

call them by their first names. you're an adult now, too!

that is if they say it's OK. if they are nice, I don't see why they wouldn't mind.

I'm calling my in-laws by their first names. But I always have. That is how I was introduced to them.

Re: Inlaw and names

I agree with swags, I could definately come up with a few names for my FMIL, but right now I just call them by their first names and will continue to do so after we are married. My FH doesn't really call my mom anything. He always just says your mom, it's weird.

Re: Inlaw and names

I usually never called them anything, but if addressing them correctly I would use Mr. & Mrs. They told me to call them by their first names about a year ago, but I felt awkward, so I continued to use Mr. & Mrs. or nothing at all. It wasnt until recently when I just started using their first names. They also told me to call them mom and dad when I felt comfortable, but I dont think I can. It feels too weird for me. FH doesnt address my parents as Mr. and Mrs. or anything at all... Just doesnt use anything.
Growing up, I can never recall calling any of my parents friends Mr. & Mrs. it was always by their first names. I would only use it in situations with people I really didnt know very well.

Re: Inlaw and names

When I have had to address FMIL by name I call her Mrs. ____. I'll never call her Mom cuz that's reserved for my own mother & nobody can ever compare. If she ever tells me to call her by her first name I will.

Re: Inlaw and names

i have no idea what to do either...i worked with FFIL before Fh and I started dating - so I call him by his first name - and i met FMIL before we started dating and was first introduced to her as her first name. But he calls my parents Mr. & Mrs. so i think it's rude for me to call them by their first names if he calls my parents something different.
And then, they got me a card the othe day to congratulate me on a new job - and they signed it Mom & Dad with their last name.....!
so do i call them mom and dad, mr. & mrs. or first names?
i am so thoroughly confused.

when my father asked my grandfather what he should call him when my parents got married - my grandfather said 'Sir', so that's what my dad has called him ever since!

I avoid having to use a particular name..

I just talk in their direction and hope they are paying attention!!
